has anyone ever made a sound booth for recording vocals in? Just curious your experience with doing such a thing. I'm planning on making one, and I know some others might be interested in this topic since most of us are home-recording and singing out loud can be a problem especially if you have a family!

It's a great idea! I've never done one but it can also be used to record your guitar. You can put your amp inside it and set it at a high volume.

That can be a very cool project, do you have some budget, or some space where you can pull it off?

I have not made one *yet* but I'm planning on making one. My current situation kind of demands one Being a family man, I'm at work all day, I get home and hang with the kid(s) and wife, then at about 10:00 p.m. everyone goes to bed and I have the rest of the evening (til like 2:00 am) to practice. And as you know, making music is making noise!
I can keep my amp at a decent level for practicing, but singing - I need to be able SING out loud - it does little to help you improve your voice if you're forced to sing low volumes when in reality on stage, you need to sing full volume! So I need to build a sound booth - something I can really shout it out inside and not make my family grumpy It would also be great for recording - my microphone is really sensitive and picks up artifacts - even the computer fan bleeds through, not to mention people walking in the kitchen and rattling utensils. So I'm trying to find a decent design and figured I'd bring it up here because as musicians, we all like to practice as loud as we can, but we have neighbors, family, and outside noises to contend with, so I thought there might be a solution out there that everyone could benefit from. Ideally, it would be awesome if there was a design for a "temporary booth" - something not destructive to your house! I mean, putting up a permanent structure means nailing it to the framework of your house! That's not ideal, especially if you're renting, or as in my case, it's your family room and others like to hang out in there to watch television, relax on a couch and have friends over - so you don't really wanna destroy your house for something like this. But perhaps there's a way to construct one like a heavy duty 7 or 8 foot tall box construction that is hinged so it can be folded or something. I don't know, just thinking outside of the box. Last resort would be to find a corner and make it a permanent addition, but I'm just throwing it out there. I'm sure this is something Tony might have some input on Perhaps you've seen something out there and want to share it. @sensible Jones - how big was the one you created and did the drummer sit on the toilet when playing drums? This was interesting - 4 products beginning around 5:00 into the video. The poor man's vocal booth is an auto mute blanket 0.o Some things I found on the internet so far This is funny as hell - the ghetto booth - I'm not recommending it, but wanted to share cause it made me LOL I'll post videos of things I find on the internet that I think might be reasonable for those of us with a limited budget and space. This may be a decent foundation for a decent booth design This post has been edited by SirJamsalot: Nov 22 2011, 07:27 PM -------------------- The more I practice, the more I wish I had time to practice!

If you can find a closet that you can make in to a "spare" (E.g. toss all the stuff in the garage), you can make a poor mans audio booth really quick/dirty. Essentially, it's a closed space already (probably even has a door and an interior light) so you just need to put up some sonnex/accoustic foam/etc. and make sure to somewhat seal the door jams which you can do with winterproofing flaps/strips from home depot. You can run the cable under the door, put a mic stand and head phones in there and bingo Instant sound booth. If you want to get crazy, (E.g. not have the wife complain about you screaming in the closet) Hang a layer of carpet/foam/sheetrock/bedding, etc. or two. It will eat in to your space but silence is golden. that's the gangsta solution! I don't have the luxury of a closet in my particular situation, but definitely a possibility for those who do! -------------------- The more I practice, the more I wish I had time to practice!
