i've just reread your welcome post. you wrote you were thinking about a thumb brace... i was too, and i already tried some things:
the best thing i came up with was taping the thumb with medical tape (sports tape I usually use for volleyball), either with or without a pen on the backside. and indeed it does help a LOT. it needs a lot less strength and isn't tiring at all but surely gets uncomfortably quickly...
