Good idea, I'll see what I can do, I think the dominant 7 chord and lick improv will have to be an ongoing thing running in the background if you know what I mean. I'll do it every day and post things once in a while, I don't seem to have the creativity and/or the arsenal to make it effective at the moment, which is why I said I will move it to the end of my lesson/practise as an ongoing project. I hope that makes sense. I really struggle with it, it's the hardest thing I've done so far, obviously some techniques are still extremely hard for me but this is more of a thinking /creative block.
Sorry for rambling, I find it hard to explain but I'm not complaining, really I'm not. It will come to me if I keep plugging away I just have to be mindful to prevent it from becoming a chore which is why I'm suggesting swapping priority to the blues lesson. Cheers Phil By the way, since trying to follow the chords, I've really started to enjoy listening to music more than ever and appreciating the solos more, even though I can't do it very well. For some reason, my ears are really standing up when I hear Mark Knopfler. I appreciate him now more than ever. Hi Phil,
My recommendation based on this last post is that you try going simpler from time to time. What about improvising over the blues progression using only Blues Scale and focusing on rhythm for a while? What about adding other notes gradually? -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
I haven't been very well the past few days, I've had a horrible head cold, sinusitis and an eye infection, it's been a struggle just to get through work and has prevented me from sleeping with the pain. Pain doesn't normally bother me but this sinus pain is terrible. Anyway, I haven't been able to give guitar my full attention, I actually fell asleep last night strumming the dominant 7 chords and fell off my chair I've been on and off the forum but not much playing. Hopefully it's getting better now, I feel a wimp saying that a head cold has debilitated me but working on my feet for nine hours and not sleeping takes its toll . So, when you say just play the blues scale, you mean the same one over the whole progression? Work out the blues scale for each chord without moving the same pattern along the neck or move the same pattern along the neck? The hardest for me is coming up with ideas using the arpeggio notes, maybe, as you inferred, I'm trying to be too advanced, I'll see what I can do as soon as I can, hopefully tonight. So, when you say just play the blues scale, you mean the same one over the whole progression? Work out the blues scale for each chord without moving the same pattern along the neck or move the same pattern along the neck? I mean the same one over the whole progression and guide your phrasing using your ear. Blues guitarists use everything, sometimes they follow the chords, sometimes they just stay on one position, one scale and play it for a while. If following the chord is distracting you now from making cool music, my suggestion is to use only one scale, and add the other concepts gradually. You don't have to use all the elements at the same time. You can also try this idea: Follow the chords but work on a very small part of the neck. For example, you can use strings 1 and 2 and only play between frets 5 and 8. This can be also helpful. -------------------- My lessons

Thanks for your advice Gab,I do struggle to take the easier path once I'm on the hard road
I'm feeling a bit better, I've found that taking 400mg of Ibuprofen 5 times a day is helping with the sinus pain, much better than just normal pain killers, and also the antibiotic eye cream is starting to work now so that should stop being so sore and watery. Cheers Phil UPDATE: Found this track and played A minor blues over it for an hour. Best fun I've had for a long long time on the guitar, thoroughly enjoyed it even though I am feeling like death warmed up. I just put the A Minor blues in all positions in the scale generator and got lost in the music. I was actually having palpitations at times. https://youtu.be/xVCPeG6phqk?t=145 Go to 2:30 if using the embedded player. That's exactly what I wanted you to try. You should never loose this feeling. You can add other concepts gradually.

Thanks Gab,
I think I try too hard sometimes and struggle along not really enjoying it but feeling it's something that needs to be done to progress. I guess doing this makes one try less hard but at a subconscious level. I can hear the chord changes when I just listen to the backing but when I'm playing I only really hear the beat, I don't know how to overcome that, I've been trying for a long time. I'll get a recording up asap and you can critique and advise please. Thanks Phil English lesson: It may be a typo but just in case it isn't, "You should never loose this feeling" should be "You should never lose this feeling". https://www.grammarly.com/blog/loose-lose/ This post has been edited by Phil66: Oct 18 2019, 01:06 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Great Phil! Thanks for the English class.
It takes time to visualize the fretboard in this way and note choices is only one element. Rhythm is another one and I consider it even more important so getting back to the old Pentatonic minor shape can be positive to work on it. A second level practice would be: - Practice using Blues Scale all the time and if you identify the I chord during the jam you can shortly switch to Pentatonic Major scale. -------------------- My lessons

In the scale generator there is blues make and minor. I did think it would be minor but wanted to confirm. Cheers Phil -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil!
That's beautiful! Your phrasing is very expressive here mate. You sound relaxed and enjoying the moment. I think that I was right when I said that you needed some time of 1 scale practice. This helps you to put your attention to rhythm, and melodies. The idea is that you can play in this way even when you are following the chords, but that's not an easy job because you first need to be able to switch scales without thinking. One question, are you able to hear the chord changes and know which chord is sounding while playing this? -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
To answer your question, I can hear the chord changes when I purely listen to the backing but if I just started the backing anywhere I wouldn't be able to tell if it was the i, iv or v chord being played. When I am playing along my ears switch to listening to the drums for some reason. One thing I'm glad about is that I can play some quite nice blues using one scale which show I can do it I need to develop being able to not only switch scale patterns with ease (something I can do if I play with no backing) but also recognise not only chord changes when playing but also which chord is being played. I don't know how to approach this, I'm thinking maybe recording a i iv v chord progression with just guitar but have a different guitar sound for each chord, just as a starting point. Maybe that's a terrible idea, what do you think? Cheers Phil -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. I think that this is related to one thing that you've been doing: Ear training.
You need to practice hearing the cadence: I to IV, I to V, IV to V and V to IV. Practice singing this intervals. Play the backing track, listen to it and try to identify the chords. Your idea can help if you then slowly get used to identify the changes without the marks. -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
I'll see what I can do. I've looked for a 12 bar guitar only backing track on YouTube but couldn't find one, I'll have to make my own. I think the biggest hurdle at the moment is not being able to focus on the guitar in the backing track while I'm playing, my ears seem to shut it out and focus on the bass drum. I also think that it was to much for me, trying to play chords and lead, I think maybe do each independently until very comfortable and then slowly start adding notes between chords. More time is needed I think, how much more though? Who knows Cheers Phil This post has been edited by Phil66: Oct 22 2019, 03:02 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Making the backing by your own is a great idea.
Also, you can find multitracks from lots of artists here. Maybe you can use the only rhythm guitar track from any blues guitarist. https://remixpacks.ru/?f1=&f2=&f3=&...;wpcfs=preset-1 -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
That site looks handy, just don't click on the BPM search box I'll see what I can do. Regarding my ear training, I did let it slip because I go to t level in the program where I kept on getting 8 out of 10 correct. Whether it was the same two intervals or not I don't know because it plays them in a random order. I stuck at it for 6 weeks, constantly 8/10 and wouldn't allow myself to go to the next level so it petered out. Maybe htat was a mistake and I should have gone to the next level and then back again after a while. Cheers buddy. Phil -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Thanks Gab,
I think my ear would let me down there but maybe I can find a list somewhere of "Songs in the key of ........." and take it from there. I think I'd get confused knowing if they were dominant chords or minor etc. I'll investigate, just very busy with work at the moment so time is limited.
