Learn major scale modes. That's something everyone must know.
Start with major scale like this: Major Scale Patterns This post has been edited by Emir Hot: Aug 20 2009, 02:39 PM -------------------- Check out my <a href="https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/instructor/Emir-Hot" target="_blank">Instructor profile</a>

Nope, major pentatonic is relative minor pentatonic.
But if you follow that logic, you will learn that: C Major scale (Ionian mode) has the same notes as A Minor scale (Aeolian mode) - thus you can say A minor (ABCDEFG) is relative to C major (CDEFGABC) And if you will dig a bit deeper , you will learn that: C Ionian = D Dorian (jazzy/bluesy sounding minor scale) = E Phrygian (kinda terrifying sound due to min 2nd) = F lydian (major scale with kind of toxic flavour due to Aug 4th) = G mixolydian (has very distinguished dominant sound) = A Aeolian = B Locrian (VERY "terrifyingly" sounding scale, due to being half diminished) First learn the theory behind pentatonics, since they are basicly simplified Aeolian (min. penta) and Ionian (Maj. penta) modes. From there onwards, dig the modes and you will know exactly how you can make everything sound the way you like (and few months/years after that its good to study the modes of Minor Harmonic scale, but thats a looong shot ) This post has been edited by Jakub Luptovec: Aug 20 2009, 02:45 PM -------------------- my youtube account with riffs and ideas: https://www.youtube.com/user/Phoenygzus

Look how they resemble open chords - they ale called forms, when you play an E chord - thats the E form What you see on that diagram is that E form played with barre on different spot on neck:)
Tho I cant really help you, if I dont know how much do you already know.. Do you know basic chord triads? Theory behind pentatonics? Intervals? I believe those are the most crucial:) This post has been edited by Jakub Luptovec: Aug 20 2009, 03:03 PM -------------------- my youtube account with riffs and ideas: https://www.youtube.com/user/Phoenygzus

Ah - then you have three options -
I can tell you the basics of intervals and chord triads (no problem for me and others here) and other stuff you'd like to/need to know or I can show you the way to Andrews Theory corner (VERY well written, in lots of sections) and you can do the study on your own. or you can ignore theory completely and just drill the scale patterns ( which I really DONT advice, since you cant become accomplished player without knowing what the hell are the notes you are playing ) Btw. in any way, Major scale (Ionian mode is different name) and Minor scale (Aeolian mode is a different name) are your next steps. thanks but i dident understand annything of that xD. Emir, why does it stand "E or F shaper" etc under every scale diagram? isent it like the minor pentatonic that you can play it all over the neck? Black note in the box is your root note. You can take any note and set it for the root. For example if I want to set my root to G note I would end up with G major scale if I follow that diagram. Read from left to right and from bottom (6th string) to top (1st string). Don't worry about the shape names E, C, D ... it's got nothing to do with the actual scale. That's because the chord shape in each position is based on some simple open chords. It can look like C, A, G, E (or F), D. That's why this system is called CAGED system. -------------------- Check out my <a href="https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/instructor/Emir-Hot" target="_blank">Instructor profile</a>

dont take this the wrong way, but maybe you should work on theory first. theory is obviously boring..no one wants to do practice it, but it is a must. it is the only way this will all make sense (trust me it is a lot easier than you think) theory also helps when you are improvising so you know where your hands are going! +1 well said. -------------------- Youtube

Yeh Major modes is the way to go after pentatonic. You could also check out the Hirojoshi Modes and the Harmonic Minor Modes, though I do strongly advise learning Major modes first.

Next step would be to practice same scale with intervlas, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on...
Also play it over different harmonic changes! -------------------- |

do i need to know all the major boxes to be able to play the modes? do i need to know all the notes?

Well technically you could play them with just one box, but it is incredibly useful to know all of them. And again you don;t have to know all the notes, but it's very useful.
