I've had the first Van Halen album on in my car the past couple of days, can't stop looping it. I'm hearing things that washed over me before. Man, he was innovative.
This is just one of many many things that I enjoyed but didn't appreciate back when it came out, just listen to the lick at 00:19, I've only just noticed that it is similar to a lot of stuff Mr Vai does. Truly a killer album and a watershed even in Guitar as is Diary of a Mad man, two of the greatest guitar Gods ever at their prime. This kind of work remains vital, even decades after it was made. So much of what came after is a bit derivative of these seminal works. I'd lump Number of the Beast in there as well. Also Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. These works are so important because of how much influence they had over nearly everything with a guitar that came after.
