i have learned all my modes, i haven't really played over backing, but i started today on B dorian over a B minor7.
i will move on to C#phrygian, over C#minor7 next. then D lydian over Dmajor7, and so on.

is this the correct practice of modes over chords? or should i also focus on using certain modes with chords that are not built from the same degree of the major scale the mode comes from? this statement is confusing

what i mean is a mode like B dorian, are there specific chords other than Bminor its good with like C#minor? or when i'm on C#minor should i always focus on C#phrygian? and so on?

Thanks Ken,

I'll look into it one of the days, much appreciated smile.gif I find it all very interesting, intriguing and confusing in equal measures. Then you read something like this https://www.guitarplayer.com/lessons/the-mi...ul-scale-of-all and you start thinking how far can you go with hybrid scales /modes? Can you have enough of a hybrid scale to end up with all twelve notes in it? Then it becomes a matter of tasty note choice and resolving once in a while.

I used to read a lot of Guitarist Magazine's articles about players and they'd say things like "it's amazing how he uses notes in this solo that are from a completely unrelated scale but he makes them work", one such comment was about Dimebag, was he just playing what sounded good to him and letting the academics dissect it or was he really clued up on his theory?

Cheers

Stay safe

Phil
