Hi GMC

For some time I have been working on "always with me......"
It was reading Phil’s topc that made me want to.

I stopped "Shunk Funk" lesson because the large movements give me pain in my right arm.
My shock wave treatment is almost complete, I’ll resume as soon as possible.

Jo SATRIANI is my favorite guitarist since I was 15 years old. I tried to learn this song 10 years ago but it was too difficult.
Today, I have facilities to play thanks to the work I did every day on GMC.

This is my first one shot.
I still have a lot of work to do. I’m quite happy because I’m starting to understand the legato placement.
Apart from the precision, the first is almost good because the second is still wobbly.

I share my files for all guitarist want to learn it.
- Original Youtube lesson
- My playlist cut in Lesson 14 PART .
- Backing track
- Tab improve by Benjamin (Right click and "save as" if the site gives you an error)

My own self-criticism.
Precipitation on the beat / Accent to be improved / Stray noise / Ghost notes / bend release / Legato / Slide / Vibrato

That's brilliant Manu. I still can't get the legato part down.

Hi Phil

Thank you. smile.gif
To improve this part - I suggest you work on "Ben's band of legato".
To progress you must position the left hand perpendicular to the neck.

About always with me... I share my files. Maybe it help you ?
I work with this Youtube lesson. The problem is that the guy talks too much.
I cut out the ten old parts like GMC lessons. It lacks the very slow side but just slow down the speed in youtube parameter.
Here my playlist : Lesson 10 PART .

You can download on my Google Drive :
Backing track : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ju1_K4lem6...iew?usp=sharing
Tab : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wzF1-j8yaT...iew?usp=sharing (Video lesson is different about legato part - Video Better for me)

Have a nice day.

Hi Manu!

Don't worry about the Skunk Funk lesson. You can start working on it when you will feel better. Until then, avoid anything that can cause you pain in the arms.

About "Always with me, always with you", I can say that it sounds very promising. For a first take, it sounds really good.
You know, it's always a pleasure to listen to your awesome takes. smile.gif

I liked the fact that you "judged" your playing in a very objective way. This is a proof that you are a very good player and you have already reached the point when you have started seeing the "details" behind the notes/sounds. That's really awesome!!! smile.gif

Because you are still in the working process with this cover, I have a tip for you (if you want to do an experiment). It's something that Darius learned me and it changed my playing in a very good way. smile.gif
Try when you play slow or soft parts to keep the pick in a straight position because it will give you the maximum sound of the string and the minimum sound of the pick. Use the pick in an angle position only when you have a lot of string skipping or fast patterns.

Keep up your awesome work!

That Shut Up & Play Link has three videos, two of them talk you through slowly showing how to play the song, it's not exactly line Joe's version but when listening nobody would tell. cool.gif

I just tabbed out this in the last 1½ hour in Guitar Pro 8. I know it sounds a bit arrogant, but I think it's as easy to read and closer to a precise tab than I have otherwise seen. The ones I have seen have all had the snare-clap reversed compared to the studio version.

Tab will be uploaded to Ultimate-Guitar too.

Ornaments is a really important aspect of setting apart players - and taking a step between levels, as well as sounding more "pro". I think studying those things that you like from Satch will help you immensely!

Some comments for you, MisterSuperstar cool.gif

And this is what I meant about the tapping section:

9-7-9-5-7-9-7-5-7-7-7-
11-11-9-7-9-7-5-7-9-7-5-4-2-2-2-2
11-11-9-7-9-7-5-7-9-7-4-5-5-5-5-5

All other notes in between are 12-0-X where X is the notes from the list above smile.gif

On second thought: These are just my opinion by the way, and I think Satch plays the song more quiet in the real version.

Hi Benjamin

Thanks for your video. it’s great !
The subtitles are not available for this one but I think I have understood everything.
Your playing is much more relaxed than mine.I really like the way you approach licks at the beginning of the music.
I’ll try to take inspiration from it. For the others I see that you learn them at the same time as you watch the video.

I am impressed by your direct reading of tablature. Personally, I do not understand reading. I use the tabs to work with the metronome because the numbers are complicated to decipher on the neck. I use videos to learn and only after I use guitar pro tab.

I hope you will learn it too, it will motivate me to go all the way. Your "neural DSP" preset is exceptional.
It does not sound the same on my guitar. It is a great frustration for me. I would like to correct that.

Thank you for the taping section. I will learn as soon as I master the lesson because I don’t want to go too fast.

I'm glad you liked the video smile.gif Maybe the subtitles become available or I can try to make it work. I don't know how though.

I try to always be relaxed as possible, but I also use very light strings (08-38) and the strings are very close to the fretboard. It's difficult because it's easy to go out of tune cause it's so light, but it doesn't require much strength.

I hope my video can inspire you a little bit. You and Phil inspire me to learn the song - so I will go for it too. I haven't learned a full song in a long long time.

I read tablature very directly and fast. I have used Guitar Pro for 20 years. I think it's a habit by now. I look at the tablature and the sheet music at the same time to understand the rhythm too.

And yes, I have to make different presets for my different guitars. This one doesn't sound good on my yellow/orange Ibanez, but I try to just adjust some of the settings and get it to sound good. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't laugh.gif

Ah, I have to install GP6 again and make sure it looks okay. It'll be here in maybe half an hour smile.gif

I also made a little quick video about playing a melody from tablature/sheet:

I will upload the file as soon as I can.

I cannot get the file to look nice in Guitar Pro 6 (I was never a fan of 6, so I don't know how to make it look nice). It looks messy and not very nice sad.gif

So I have tried another thing:
PDF made with GP8: Attached File  Joe_Satriani___Always_with_Me__Always_with_You.pdf ( 190.74K ) Number of downloads: 235

MP3 made with GP8: Attached File  Joe_Satriani___Always_With_Me_Always_With_You_GP8_v2.mp3 ( 5.41MB ) Number of downloads: 255

Next week I should try to update mine with your pdf.
Thank you for video. I admit that tablature reading is very rare for me.
I don’t like it and I don’t want to learn to do it.
My son is like you, he can read and play live.

See you soon
Have a nice sunday

You don't HAVE to learn to read or use tablature. Some people never learn about it and do perfectly fine. cool.gif
The reason that I learned it was simple: my ears sucked (they still sometimes do), so I needed to learn visually and see "Ah! I must play the 5-7-8 on the B string and then 5-7-8 on the E string!" (it's just an example), and back then it was easier for me to understand it by seeing it rather than by hearing it cause of my bad ears laugh.gif Then with time came the knowledge that 5-7-8 on the B string is E, F#, G and 5-7-8 on the E string is A, B, C etc.

And when I learned about rhythm values, it quickly made sense in my mind. Like mathematics and patterns. But that is how my brain works and other people have a long and good career in different ways biggrin.gif

I also started doing a lot of "no look" practice maybe 1½-2 years ago, where I just try to tell myself to not look at the fretboard and at first I played a lot of wrong notes, but it doesn't happen that often anymore. I think that has helped me in two ways:
1. To read and play quicker from tabs/sheet
2. To train my ears

This song is packed with ornamentation and Joe makes great use of such smile.gif Some great posts about this song and great to see folks working on it as a team!! Here is one of the vids manu shared from the playlist of breaking this tune down into chunks. Its similar to one of bens vids showing a bit of a slide to give flair. This type of thing can be subtle but is part of what gives this song and joes playing such a great vibe.
