smile.gif Hello to everybody - I am new to this forum and to GMC . I'm a beginner but I've tried to play guitar for many years with no progression .This is my last chance to master guitar ! now, I don't know what type of amplifier and guitar effect to use in order to produce a sound like the one that I find in every GMC lessons ( Tapping lesson N°1 e.g.)
Actually I have only a small Beringer Vtone GMX110 amp. with built in effects .
As I play only in my house I can't play at high volume .Could anyone give me some help ?

Alex from Florence Italy

Welcome Alex!

You can get most basic tones from any modelling device such as PODs, Pandora, Toneport or any MultiFX unit like BOSS, Zoom, etc.

If you already own an amp with built in effects just try to add drive/gain to suit the lessons sound & the basic effects such as delay, reverb & maybe chorus. Getting the exact same sound can be tricky, as it depends on the guitar, amp & effects each instructor uses. And last but not least, the fingers!

For that tapping lesson a fair amount of distortion (gain) will be needed to achieve the sound of the lesson, and also pay attention to the pull-off movement of the fingers to make it "sound".

Hi and welcome!

I don't know your amp and what it can do, but if you want something like a Line6 POD for practicing it has good sound.
Later in June Behringer is releasing their VAMP3, which is a sort of a POD copy but much cheaper and surely a little less in sound quality. But I guess it'll be ok. There are not amps but more for connecting to your computer or playing with headphones.

If you want to have an amp I think people can reccomend you tons of good ones with the sounds your looking for (i.e amps with amp modeling and built in effects) from Vox, Peavey, Lines and possibly more.

Welcome to GMC Alex !

I suggest getting Pod X3 Live as effects unit, it virtually has anything. If you don't want to get an amp, you can plug in headphones into it or use your computer speakers when you plug it into computer.

As far as amp goes, up to 100$ my recommendation is Line 6 Spider III amp. It has effects built into it and will serve you for practicing very well!

Hi and welcome!!

For home practice try the line 6 spiders, vox valvetronix and peavey vypyr as a starter amp. All have built in effects and are quite cheap, under 200 euro for the 15w versons i imagine (I sold a 15w vox vt for 80 on ebay so check that out as well!) DONT be tempted to buy a bigger 50w amp if you are starting out, you will regret it!
All these amps have a quality solid state sound and also master volumes and headphone sockets so you can get good distortion at lower volumes, ideal for bringing out tapping and such, if you still need more add a fuzz pedal and that should give you mad metal tone!

hope this helps, let us know what you decide!

Welcome to GMC, as for the tone, I would suggest buying a POD XT (or X3 if you play bass too), it's not really expensive, it has load of effects and you can plug headphones in it to play silently, or plug it to your amp. It will also allow you to record yourself and then post your takes on the forum.

Cheers

Welcome aboard man! smile.gif

If you want to make a tone similar to the one in the lesson, you gotta do some tweaking, and know your amp inside out. This means you should have a good understanding how different modelings & effects behave and alter the sound when you turn them on.

For starters try to make a preset that has similar gear that it is used in the lesson, and try to play with EQ settings in order to achieve similar sound coloration. This will get you started nicely. If settings are not marked in the lesson, you can ask the instructor to help you with the settings, and tell you what he used for the lesson.

Please tell us what you did, and what we can do to help you further. cheers mate smile.gif

Welcome to GMC! You will have a great time here learning!

If I had one recommendation, it would be an Pod XT (or X3 or live) - the sound quality is superb which really leads to better and faster learning (along with a moderate to high quality guitar - avoid 'beginner' guitars). Since I picked up a Pod about 6 months ago, I do not play (or need to play) my amp (Line 6 Spider II).

Welcome to GMC Alex

I don't use an amp. I play through my EMU 0404 soundcard and listening through my computer speakers (studio monitors Edirol MA-15D). The recording software I use is Sonar 7 producer edition. There I load a plugin called "Amplitube 2" - you need to buy this separately. That's all I need to get the sound I want and record stuff.

I hope this was helpful.
