To Tuck Or Not To Tuck, fretting hand's pinky

Nov 11 2010, 03:47 AM	GMC:er Posts: 22 Joined: 31-July 10 From: Tifton, GA	I'll try to be as brief and concise with my question as possible - I have been playing jazz and bluegrass scales on the acoustic guitar for many years. And so naturally I have many ingrained habits. One of which is that I point my pinky finger on my fretting hand upwards while playing scales. This of course was never a problem in my former life, but now that I'm on a quest to be a string bending rocker, it is. Mostly because I definitely have more strength and control over my bends when I tuck my pinky finger on my fretting hand. This of course works great when I'm just jumping from one bend to the next, but when I start playing scales I revert back to auto-pilot and the tucked pinky tends to "get in the way". I mean most of you guys, and by that I mean instructors, bend with your pinky finger tucked. But there are several of you who do not. But tucked or not, this seems to true - Those of you who tuck your pinky finger on your bends also play scales with your pinky finger tucked. And vice versa. Acknowledge it and then work it to your advantage. Also, check out ex Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland (now in fusion band OHM).. he had a severed tendon in his hand which means his little finger sticks up at an unusual angle, but he still created an amazing style with insanely fast and agile runs. Although, do you tend to just use your first 3 fingers when playing scales and 3 note per string patterns etc ? A lot of players like Yngwie and Chris Poland do that so it's not a bad thing.. but maybe you should start using your little finger instead of your 3rd finger ? That's the amazing things about hands.. when we start asking them to do something, they adapt to the task !! Also, how strong is your little finger ? Do you use it to perform bends ? Emir tends not to tuck. Muris tends to tuck. I don't have any point to make after that. Whatever is comfy and however your hand wants to fall would be my vote, though you have heard from masters of the instrument in this thread already. Cheers!
