That is perfectly ok to look where your left hand is or even right!! And it really depends what lick you are playing to be able to play it blind..We often look at our left hand when changing positions (or chords), especially if a larger jump on fretboard is required - in order not to miss the fret/chord...You will see as you develop your skill that you will be able to play more and more things blindly...

That is how things are at beginning,
you really have to watch out for both hands. But with enough time this will come more natural, you will play with more comfort and confidence, don't worry. -------------------- Youtube

Am I doing something wrong? should I be constantly playing it really slowly? or is it just I haven't been playing long enough so that my hand knows where to go? Is this something that all new guitarists go through or am I doing something wrong . Everyone goes through it. It's harder than you'd expect because the frets are closer together as you move away from the nut. It's one thing to remember what a power chord feels like to your left hand, it's another to remember that it feels different at fret 2-4 than it does at fret 8-10. I struggle with it too, so I don't have the absolute answer but I'll share what I've been doing to help since at this point, for me, I have positioning troubles when I'm looking too. I've been taking the route of trying to keep it slow and watching my hand...some day I won't have to watch because some day it will become mostly automatic. I've been concentrating on stuff that has me changing hand positions a lot. back and forth, up and down. I've been playing around with Hisham's Downstrokes and Position Shifting lesson this week. I also do an exercise my guitar teacher showed me where I take an arpeggio and then play it in different positions all the way up the neck. -------------------- Guitars: ESP Semi-Hollow Eclipse, 1984 Ibanez Roadstar RS440, Peavey T-60, Daisy Rock Rock Candy Custom
