On my RR24 i am using 0.12 strings and have it tuned to D standard. I have always been having problems playing leads with that guitar because i cant seem to get the tones to ring out properly. It is alot better when i havce played a bit more with it.
Now to my question: Does the heavier string gauge makes it harder for me to play leads and get the tone to ring out as it should? -------------------- My Gear

Yes I think it could be a possible effect - especially if you are noticing this after switching form lighter strings. I use a 009-046 set which gives me thicker strings for riffing and thinner for soloing - I think it's a good workaround / compromise. when comparing with my other guitars that i am using that have 0.10 s strings its massive difference. I will take the guitar to a tech and have it setup. -------------------- My Gear

Yeah, if you want to play leads it would be best to put lighter strings on it. Thicker strings can sound a bit dull if they are very thick.
Best would be to use some hybrid set as Kris suggested - one that has thicker strings for riffs and lighter for leads. I know Ernie Ball makes some nice hybrid sets. D standard is a bit low. On such low tunings strings get different characteristics, they tend to get pretty floppy. Try to use drop D with 11-52 hybrid set, it can yield some great results
