So I'm now selling my Marshall Avt50x on Ebay because it had not enough gain and low end for Metal + it is not loud enough for rehearsing. I've already settled for a Halfstack (Marshall JVM410 with a 1960 cab) but using a 100 watt halfstack in my room would be more than Overkill (besides the fact that I woul have to carry it from my room in the attic to the rehearsal room every week). So I'll need another amp for bedroom use and I need the help and suggestions of you guys.

It can be smaller and have less watts than my old marshall combo but it has to have a metal tone. Please no modeling gear like pods or spider amps; I've tried those and I can stand them. I am open for any brand and amp type. I would prefer an all-tube amp but I'll also check hybrid and solidstate amps...

for Solid State I'd go for any Roland Cube amp. They are not as great as any decent tube amp. And they did model other (famous) tube amp sounds. But for bedroom/anywhere practicing they are great. you can get a pretty decent tone from them and they are a good buy for your money.

Hybrid I don't know anything about them. So can't help you here.

Tube. Everyone suggests an Orange Tiny Terror. So maybe you should look into that. I also know that some crazy dude at Marshall made an 15 watt stack and managed to put it into production. Don't know if they are any good. But let's face it. They are kinda cool. tongue.gif But to be honest I can't help you on Tube amps very much because I suck too much to play a Tube amp.

Hope this helps, Although I doubt it.

Whats your price limit?
I can recommend peavy amps. this one is great. 409€ for an full tube amp is a good price.
I have played the head only version in a local music store and it sounded awesome, especially for metal.
If this amp is to loud you can try the peavey envoy 110 or the Bandit. Both use hybrid technology. I have the envoy 110. I even play with it live.

You know what I'm recommending so I won't say anything... laugh.gif

I didn't understand if you've got a cabinet at home and one at rehearsal looking for a head? Either way, a few cool options that I'm interested in myself right here and right now. Not really the highest gain but goo denough for my taste.
- Orange Rocker 30
- ENGL Screamer (Or Thunder which is a bit cheaper)
- ENGL Ritche Blackmoore signature <--- Yummy!

Not too cheap amps, except for the Thunder and not too expensive in a segment of GOOD amps. There's plenty of sound clips on the net and youtube... of various and sometimes doubtful quality. As usual. But you be the judge of it's enough gain in these.
www.rocksolidamps.com has plenty on ENGL amps.

below 700 euros is the price limit...

I didn't know there was a 50 watt version of the Valveking! Thanks! That might be a good Idea, I'll definitely go and check how the valveking sounds with a built in speaker.

For the tiny terror: I played both the stack and the combo just yesterday at a music store and they are pretty cool but it is limited by the fact that it has no real eqalizer and no effects loop. I couldn't get it to it's full potential.

My sister has a Roland cube and once again it's modelling...

No I'll only have a 4x12 cab in the rehearsing room so I would have to buy a smaller one for my room.
I apreciate your help Micke (and your enthusiasm on the Orange) but the rocker tone is too vintage for me. The blackmore is a 100 watt head and as I said I already chose one as my main amp for gigs etc.
The engl combos are a great idea although the screamer is just above my price limit. Thanks a lot I'll give them a try!

Randall and Peavey have some nice metal combos, check them out. They are not expensive either.

Randall, of course! biggrin.gif What's more bedroom metal than a Randall 50TC (50w bedroom). And cheap too. Best suggestion so far!

My decision will be either the Randall rg 50tc, the peavey valveking 112 or the engl thunder. I will go and try those in my local store next week and I'll let you guys know which one I bought. Thanks everybody and don't hold back any further suggestions.

I would also recommend randall , something like this : http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...-Amp?sku=481686

You can always turn it down in your bedroom and should be loud enough for rehearsals/gigs.

Great metal amp.

I will try the same model you suggested bogdan but not the 80watt version. There is a 50 watt version which should be more than enough for my room.

Of course mate ! I misunderstood your first post (thought you needed it for rehearsals too), 50wats is plenty of power (even for rehearsals and some gigs).Try it out, see if you like it smile.gif

I would say 50W is plenty for rehearsals and gigs with a good PA system Zakk so definitely consider. So be wise and tryout a smaller model in a store on a bedroom volume and crank it. The difference is huge.

One thing that you may not like with this Randall is distortion - it sounds little digital on low bedroom volumes. And face it - you'll not getting in over 10 o clock in a room that's for sure.

EDIT: Just reread your post mate, sorry for misunderstanding! smile.gif

I had diffrent amps with me in the rehearsal room and if you have a loud drummer playing double bass and a bassist with a 600 watt bass cab then you need more than a 50 watt combo with only one speaker. It is ok when it's miced for a gig but with a halfstack you don't even have to use the monitors to hear your own playing.
I know that 50 watts is plenty of power for a room and that tubes sound best when cranked but I would prefer to make me and my neighbours def than playing on one of those horrible modelers. If there is a smaller version of the randall then I will take the smaller one for sure.

Sorry I reread you post and saw that you wanted to choose 50W. I thought you were going to 80W version. Little confusion from my side.

I'm aware that you're aware about amps facts etc. Also may I suggest turning down volume a bit on rehearsals? It's not like drummer is beating harder than a 50W combo? Also if a bassist has a 600W rig that doesn't mean he have to crank it right?

I can suggest to try the peavey bandit 112, it's and hybrid amp, with a good clean and a very impressive distorted, you can choose (if I remember well...) three sound option. I remember the modern sound was just awesome for that price, at that time I play a mesa triaxis, so if the bandit sounded good to my ears I think it's means something...good luckfor the search!

ZakkWylde, you are looking for a bedroom level amp? Where do you live? ohmy.gif I have a homebrew tube amp, maybe 11watts (1 el34) that will fry your brain!!! Apartment neighbors would surely be unhappy. tongue.gif

Anyway, I too am looking for a versatile low watt amp with good metal tone.

I want to add that it does not need to be tube, just sound good.

Argh! Another edit. No modeling, effects loop, 8ohm speaker out. That's all for now, maybe.

So I went to the store and tried several amps:

-Orange Tiny Terror: Too dry for my taste, too British if you want to call it that way
-Peavey Valveking 112: Good combo but with a terrible speaker, the head sounds better (with a good cab)
-Line6 Spider Valve: Suprisingly good tone but old modeling technology (From the pod 2.0!!!) ruined the great idea of a modeling tube amp

...So I went for the 50 watt Randall gt50tc Combo. It's one hell of an amp! Loud, all tube and feels like one, FX loop, footswitch, celestion speaker...it's just awesome. I get a fairly good clean tone from it and with the boost function I can get a british crunch from it. The Overdrive channel is just Insane, on low gain settings you get a great rock tone but once you crank it you have a Metal monster with screaming hights and a very thight low end. The Randall is the exact amp I was looking for. It only has two negative aspects: Like every tube amp it does not sound as good on low volumes and the clean channel distorts easily on high volumes.

If you want the true metal sound, ENGL is the solution. All famous metal players moved with this company. You don't need any effect, just plug in and ROCK.
