I made up a new tuning yesterday. You tune all the strings 1 half step down and 1/2 of a half step. The notes end up being not in the chromatic scale but since they are all tuned evenly and by the same interval, it still sounds good, but new. And you can fool people with perfect pitch so they can't figure out the notes. Anyone else tried this?

It's called untempered tuning.
I would suggest not to use it on gigs with the band, you might get a carrot from the crowd. biggrin.gif

As far as I know, there are already some guys who did this wink.gif
Eddie van Halen - Ain't talkin about love of the best of CD is tuned down 1/4 step

And I also think Angus Young did it in some tunes, but I am not sure.

Tempered system is one we use most often,12 notes inside one octave.
You tune your guitar 1/4 down/up and you're out of system.
Of course,if whole bend is tuned that way it'd be ok,
just don't be the only one using this special feature, that's all I'm saying. smile.gif

i think it will be easy to play but if you back to the standard tune you wont be able to do what you did on 1/2 step down from hard practicing and bending and many techniques

Pantera did this a few times and used 1/4 down, and some songs i think were like 1 and 1/4 down.

Haha, I have been thinking about this before. If you record an album, people will use some time figuring out how to play your songs tongue.gif

Dimebag used to do this, pretty much no matter what tuning he was in I was a 1/4 flat, and so do the guys from Machine Head, they are tuned a little bit more sharp than C#.

Sound interesting, but standard tuning drop tuned a quarter step doesn't have much of a practical use, except to fool people trying to learn your songs. At least, that's what I think about it. But, if you had the guitar in an actual different tuning incorporating quarter steps, you could get some really cool and exotic sounding scales! happy.gif
