Their plan was to explode a car for distraction then sneak in the courthouse targeting judges and attorneys etc., they had hand grenades, automatic rifles and 8 bazooka rockets planned to be used inside the bulding.

After the police officer noticed and stopped them they opened fire from their car, the police officer killed one but got shot while trying to escape as he ran out of bullets...friends who work at the couthouse are very sad as seems everbody there knew that officer. Another one dead, one terrorist is still on the run.

Past year was terrible as such attacks, explosions were so frequent in Turkey. Just 5 days ago even on new years day an attack happened in Istanbul.

As for how I feel, I get angry at myself when any worrying thought comes to my mind as I can't let such things affect my life and freedom but on the other hand there is definitly some sort of depression trying to develop inside of me.

Man, I can't imagine what it must be like to live in a place where these kinds of things can happen at any given moment. Stay strong, Mertay and be safe.

Sadly, we do live in a place where these things happen at any moment. Remember, the Boston Marathon Bombing? Any number of School Shootings, cop shootings in Texas, 911, etc. etc. etc.? Our country is racked with attacks each year of all kinds. Maybe it's Alaska in particular you are talking about? It is a bit more quiet in terms of large scale attacks that far North. Good reason to consider living there imho smile.gif

Very sorry to hear about this latest attack in Turkey. I keep hearing Turkey more and more in the news and it's often very bad news sad.gif

Thanks guys!

They held part of the police officers funeral today at the courthouse as he's a hero who prevented a terrible massacre; http://i.cnnturk.com/ps/cnnturk/100/0x0/58...c1fe32cb8c7569b

The funeral continued at the city center although there is a storm going on here right now http://i.cnnturk.com/ps/cnnturk/100/0x0/58...781b60dc81f7783

The terrorists were from PKK (Kurdish organization who wants land from Turkey, been a problem for over 40 years), ironically the hero cop who died was Kurdish too so thats how stupid terrorism is...now there is silence, waiting for the next terrible news to happen sad.gif

Interesting post coming from a guy who once started a topic about the irrational fear of a terrorist attack in this country.
Anyway... I am happy to hear that this attack for the most part was stopped before it had the capacity to get much worse.

Believe it or not, it's possible to hold both thoughts at once smile.gif We have had attacks "In Country". Plenty of them, of one type or another. Yet statistically speaking, it's still one of the least threatening event "types" that are likely to impact you. As we talked about in that very long winded thread, you are more likely to get hit by lightning or bitten by a shark than be a victim ofo a terrorist attack.

As some very astute GMCers pointed out, it's the random nature of such events that make them so scary, not their actual frequency and or likelihood.

So yeah, we DO live in a place where such things happen. We also live in a place where fear of such events impacts far more folks than the actual events do.

Todd
