I just joined earlier today and have been browsing all the great information - I saw alot of talent that I'd love to learn from!
I'm somewhat of an old-timer, having grown up listening to 90's metal (Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Yngvie, etc.) but have only really been playing seriously for about 3 years, never been in a performing band. I picked up my first guitar lessons when I was about 20, and played for about 2 years, then I got really involved playing volleyball for the next 15 years here in Northern California. It was about a year ago that I had to give it up due to family and the amount of time required to train for tournaments and needed something I could do from home to replace that addiction, so I unpacked my guitar and well, here I am. I'm a software, database engineer with a full-time family, so basically I work all day, keep the family entertained all night, and then after everyone goes to bed, I practice til 2:00 a.m. nightly without exception. I do everything with everything I have, or I don't bother doing it at all - sleep is highly overrated Because of my odd hours, I've been looking for ways to learn that don't require band-practice since I'm awake when everyone else is asleep, and found this site which I think is everything I've been hoping for - self-paced instruction and opportunities to challenge myself by being graded (did I read that right?! I'm stoked!). So that's me in a nutshell - I'm hoping to learn enough to record an album for the sake of knowing I was able to do so. Metal by night, Christian A. -------------------- The more I practice, the more I wish I had time to practice!

I grew up with the same influences, it would be great to share experiences and knowledge welcome! Same influences - here's an experience - I met Marty Friedman and Jason Becker at a concert in the Bay Area around 90 (I don't remember the date). The one and only guitar instructor I ever had was / is friends with Jason about the time his symptoms began. Anyways, after the concert there was an "after party" hosted at house in Oakland that was converted from a hotel - had like 20 rooms and was built like some wacked out maze. I remember looking down at Marty for the handshake and it was at that moment that I realized you don't have to have Paul Gilbert's monkey hands to play guitar lol. He's got some *small* hands, but boy can he stretch those fingers! -------------------- The more I practice, the more I wish I had time to practice!
