Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Jazzy Blues Phrasing by Piotr Kaczor

Hi GMC, Hi Piotr I Work this lesson since two month. My instructor, Gab, recommended me to put it a little more swing but it is difficult for the moment.... I like this lesson, I shall make another take in a few months. Thank you

Hi there, this is a very good rendition of a difficult piece.

You've got a nice relaxed flow about your playing and you're clearly quite confident with the piece. My observations for improvement would be:

-Dynamics. You play very softly. It shows that you're very relaxed, which is good, but don't shy away from using your pick harder to attack notes and give them some real passion. You can hear how strong the notes sound in Piotr's take - try to aim for a similar level (it doesn't have to be the same) of velocity in some, not necessarily all, of your take.

-The fast picking run during the pause. You just need to work up to this one.. I think you're missing out some notes due to the speed so try to work on your alternate picking so you can eventually play it as it is written, which will really add to the authentic jazz sound.

Hi mate,

We've been working on this one at the mentoring thread (Link HERE), so you already know my thoughts about your playing and what things you should improve on this one, dynamics and swing.

I know that swing is not an easy task but I think that you-ll be able to improve dynamics soon if you focus on it.

Keep on the good job!

From what I hear in your take I can say you and Gab did an great job on this one. I would not agree with Ben about picking strenght. I think it's proper for that kind of jazz tone and it's very easy to loose the warmth of the tone when playing slightly too hard...even if only at some points. Of course this is all very subjective but I've listened to Piotr's original lesson first and I was afraid to find too bright and sharp tone in your take. But...it was a very pleasant surprise to find out you did so well with the tone and dynamics smile.gif
