Whats With String Breaking?

Sep 27 2011, 07:57 AM	Veteran Guitar Lord Posts: 2.381 Joined: 2-May 09 From: Kathmandu	I broke 1st string 3 times in a month. It breaks exactly where I bend it from, 10th/12th frets. I have been practicing Guthrie's licks and ya know how bendy his stuff is. Does that tell anything about guitar set up? I am beginning to have 2nd thoughts. I never broke strings like this probably like 2 or 3 times in my whole 16 years career, probably I never bend it to 1.5. Any tips? I can't afford to buy strings all the time.. I imagine that any restrictive effects at either end would reduce the string's ability to stretch.. so it would most likely break at the point where it's being pushed the most (by your finger) Don't quote me on that, though. The saddle can also be sharp or unusual shape so the string sits twisted in it. It's a twist that you cannot see or feel, but it affects the strings life and tension. Try this: * Take a D string (it has the smallest windings of all bass strings), and grind it against the top of the saddle, where the string is passing, so you get that part nice and smooth. * Take a graphite pencil and put some graphite in the nut groove of the strings * Take a polishing tool and polish the fret slightly You are at GuitarMasterClass.net Don't miss today's free lick. Funny though, the same thing happened to me. I broke about 3 e-strings in a row one time. So I went out and bought about 10 e-strings (bulk purchase). I haven't broken one since. Go figure. On my guitar I had the nut and bridge saddle replaced and still no joy. I reckon I broke 50 strings. It had to be my technique. I always broke them on the bridge. I use to play and sing lead in a church and would often have to switch guitars but more recently I'm only playing and now very seldom break strings. To aggressive in my playing style. I have ball bearings on the saddle (I mean on the neck) and when I pull up 1.5, it moves up a bit. slides up. Is that it? I am not sure how to prevent that.
