I broke 1st string 3 times in a month. It breaks exactly where I bend it from, 10th/12th frets. I have been practicing Guthrie's licks and ya know how bendy his stuff is. Does that tell anything about guitar set up? I am beginning to have 2nd thoughts. I never broke strings like this probably like 2 or 3 times in my whole 16 years career, probably I never bend it to 1.5. smile.gif

Any tips? I can't afford to buy strings all the time.. I need to practice NOW!! sad.gif

does the fret have a cavity where the strings gets caught or a fret-splinter, on the 10'th fret. Now I mean something extremely small, but but enough to cut the string.

Nope, can't see anything on 10/11/12/13 frets. Looks like it broke on 12th fret this time.

Something is wrong or something has changed. Strings don't start breaking after 16 years of playing.
The style changed? You never used to bend this much before. That's one thing. Bending certainly wears the strings out.

Maybe try a different gauge?

Also check the strings move freely at the nut end (those little grooves where the neck meets the headstock) and at the bridge. I imagine that any restrictive effects at either end would reduce the string's ability to stretch.. so it would most likely break at the point where it's being pushed the most (by your finger)

Don't quote me on that, though. A lot of people rub graphite (or pencil lead) between the grooves in the nut to encourage the strings to slide easily.

Hmm, it could be that the fret itself is a bit sharp due to lots of bending (it happens). The saddle can also be sharp or unusual shape so the string sits twisted in it. It's a twist that you cannot see or feel, but it affects the strings life and tension.

Try this:

* Take a D string (it has the smallest windings of all bass strings), and grind it against the top of the saddle, where the string is passing, so you get that part nice and smooth.
* Take a graphite pencil and put some graphite in the nut groove of the strings
* Take a polishing tool and polish the fret slightly

^This. There could be a metal bur on the saddle or the fret. I haven't broken a string in eons.

Also check Mudbone's cartoon about the conspiricy between guitar and string manufacturers. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Funny though, the same thing happened to me. I broke about 3 e-strings in a row one time. So I went out and bought about 10 e-strings (bulk purchase). I haven't broken one since. Go figure.

are you using nines? that could be a bit thin for agressive playing.

I use to have a huge problem breaking strings on acoustic guitars. On my guitar I had the nut and bridge saddle replaced and still no joy.
I reckon I broke 50 strings. It had to be my technique. I always broke them on the bridge.
I use to play and sing lead in a church and would often have to switch guitars but more recently I'm only playing and now very seldom break strings. To aggressive in my playing style.
My worst experience I broke 3 strings in one song. mad.gif
It cost me a small fortune. laugh.gif

I am using 10s. I have ball bearings on the saddle (I mean on the neck) and when I pull up 1.5, it moves up a bit. slides up. Is that it? I am not sure how to prevent that.
