Surprised to see how far Zakk has his pick sticking out from his thumb. Todd would not be impressed in Bootcamp biggrin.gif

Also at 00:30 in you can see that Paul has his pick quite far out. Obviously they are both supreme players, I just can't see how they play so well with the pick out so far, it feels out of control if I do that.

I never paid attention to Zakk's technique but seems its similar to marty friedman, the arm position is out and wrist angled. I've seem that most common on older blues players, likely a habbit of self learning.

Paul on the other side uses a big pick but I suspect its soft. I prefer like most a hard and easy-gliding pick but do have soft picks as I wanted to try them out. They are also in a way easy to play but you have near zero control on dynamics.

it just goes to show, everyone's advice is always subjective, and should only be used as a guideline leading to one's own personal journey to find out how they need to hold their pick according to their own hand 'design' if you will

Everyone has to find their own path at some point to be sure. In bootcamp I try to convey techniques that I know can be made to work for folks in order to help them along their journey. As players grow they often adjust their technique. Both of these guys are monster players to be sure. Paul in particular never uses ECON picking. He's alt picking only. Marty is another great example. His picking technique is bizarre and yet it works for him. smile.gif

Here marty using wads of upstrokes and his under curve style. He's a great player, but, his picking style does prevent him from playing certain types of things. He uses a lot of legato instead using lots of palm muted picking like paul gilbert for instance.

This is key I believe. The common denominator is that these players have really strong upstrokes.

I don't have that btw - and this is one main area within picking that I have never really dealt with. Someday maybe 😅
