Hey dennis, got to see that you are having fun on the forums!

If you wanna create good sounding tracks, you need:

-A sound card, can be a $xxxx digidesign hd system or a $150 m audio usb interface
-A DAW, like cubase, pro tools, nuendo, logic
-Some sound samples for drums, bass, keys
Or
A drumset, bass, keys, microphones, pre amps etc.

i think that's the basic stuff, maybe a pair of good studio monitors to mix properly smile.gif

A somewhat easier way is through the program Band in a Box..
You just type in the chord progression and choose what style the band should play in..

It is however not as good sounding as an actual backingtrack of course..

Thats much more easier, but you can't get the "custom" results you may want smile.gif

AND, you wont use your creativity (and that sucks)

I use Sonar. It's not free but it's one of the industry standard DAW. I make all my backings from scratch. I program drums, bass and keyboards by mouse in midi editor. Then I record my guitars on top and mix it all. Sometimes takes 3 hours and sometimes a whole day. Depends how many details I want to include. You asked "where do we get the backings". I never use someones else backing for GMC lesson. Actually how would I possibly do it when all these lessons are my (or instructors) ideas?

I can also recommend Band in a box for fast backings creating (for practice use). You just type in progression and style and then you can jam along! smile.gif Though its not a free software...
