Heya guys.

I'm having a lot of problems with this RHCP song Snow Hey Oh. I can play the first 1/3 on the bass just fine, but I have no idea what to do in the chorus(1:47-2:22).

I've seen Flea strum this live. But really, strumming perfect fifths(power chords) on bass with your fingers? Plus, it sounds more like finger-picking to me.

Thanks in advance.

Remember it'll also be down to the bass you're using and how far the strings are apart etc. Whether it is a 4, 5 or 6 string etc. This all gives an impact on sound you get.

I got a 5-string. Appropriate for strumming?

As long as you mute all strings that aren't required then it's fine but the strings are closer together also which makes strumming a bit easier on a 5 string.

Some basses sound better than others while strumming though. My housemates bass is awful for it but any expensive basses sound really good.

If you're playing it plugged in to an amp. Play it clean first. Get it sounding good without plugging the bass into anything.

Because you shouldn't have the sound problems whilst unplugged. Cheap basses tend to sound bad when plugged in. Just learn it unplugged and get it sounding good. And then play through amp and try and fix settings to get it to sound how it was without the amp. Always works for me. I learn without any effects as effects can cover up the fact you're playing something wrong. So I learn it without and then add amp and effects to get the desired sound for the band.

My bass sounds extremely good with an amp.

Can you record yourself playing the song and it might be easier to help you. I can play the song and make it sound good on bass and I strum rather than use another technique.

Well just hold the power chord and mute the rest of strings with left hand and hit the bass with right hand freely ... wink.gif

Kind of off topic, but this song was the official theme for WrestleMania 24 am I right? Which is like the biggest "sports" event of the year, so I guess it's a good song, even though I don't listen very much to RHCP to put it that way. biggrin.gif

How do you mute 3 freaking strings while playing a power chord on the D and G strings? ohmy.gif

I place the index finger on the root on the D string , little finger on the 5th on the G string and I place the middle finger upwards to lay over E and A (like barre but don't push it just mute) and I think it can reach your low B string with it too..If you can't just mute other strings and try not to hit the first one with your right hand..

Well I do it that way and it sound cool..Just dial in the good tone on bass, mute well (and hold clearly that power chord) , and concentrate on right hand hitting strong and just these two strings that need to play (its ok to hit others to as long as you mute)..
