Hi.I have a progression with A7 -Dmaj.A7 is acting as secondary dom. It was suggested to me that over the A7 I should play 5th mode of D harmonic minor. Is this a suitable scale to use.I was thinking A mix was better choice. Thanks

Hey. I would go with A mixo if it resolves to a Dmaj7 chord. Probably a better fit.

Not really. If it was Dm then I would say 5th mode Harmonic Minor would be a good choice. So it's the maj7 that makes me think Mixo, since A mixo is the same notes as D major. That's all.

By the way, A7 in this case is not a secondary dominant.
A7 is just the V of D (maj/min or maj7).
A 'secondary' dominant would be (in the key of D maj) E7, F#7 or B7.

Yeah, if you are in G minor then A7 is a secondary dominant, but if it moves to the key of D major, then it's a new key so not Secondary. All depends on where it goes and for how long from that A7 chord .

Basically thats the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th degrees of the D major scale, right?

So what would normally be E minor, F# Minor and B Minor would become E7, F#7, or B7 if they were turned into secondary Dominants?

Well it could be a secondary dominant. Basically, a sec dom is any 7th chord in a key that resolves to a chord that is not the tonic, and that doesn't cause a modulation, though that is debatable.

So, if you are in G minor, then anything but D7 is a sec dom unless it leads to a new key center, so if it went A7-Dmaj7-D7-Gm then it is a sec dom since it didn't leave the original key, just took a detour.

Key was G harm min. Gm Eb A7 D7 G7 Cm Ab D7
A7 & G7 sec Dom and Ab Neapolitan chord
Was confused why I was recommended to use 5th mode of D harm min over A7

Yeah. To me that is a V of V of V progression resolving to the Cm. So it is a "dominant chain" progression. You could use 5 th mode HM. But I think mixo or 4th mode Melodc Minor over those chords.

Sorry, had no idea you were in Gm.

*Yes - simplified, a sec/dom in a major key (as long as we stay diatonic) would be those minor chords turned into dominant 7ths.
