I just throw the files I wanna keep over on a portable harddrive.. But then again, I'm a failure when it comes to harder-then-basics computer stuff

It's possible, I'm a computer tech by trade. I've seen it happen but not too often. The way my old company used to restore data onto a new machine from a older machine was take the hard drive out - install it into a USB cage, copy over docs, favorites, pictures, music, desktop, outlook files, outlook express files onto the new Windows install.
I take it one step further, I usually take the entire contents of the old machine, back it up into a 'snapshot' file that can be mounted as a virtual image and copy over what I need, when I need it, this way I don't worry about getting infected by any old virus's or spyware. http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/intro.htm Check it out ^ ^ ^ |

I would either buy an external drive enclosure (usb) and put that hard drive in and use it as an external one on a new computer or put the HD into the new computers case..After you copy all the files you need you can format it and have it clean...I don't beleve bugs and viruses will transfer to a new computer (its possible but highly unlikely)

external HD is also what I recommend. And if you have the latest version of antivirus and updated, you shouldn't worry. Install anti spyware as well if you haven't already.
