So I bit the bullet and bought a new Dell XPS 420, my question is, do any of you guys know how to export files off of my old computer without using the file tranfer wizard?

Is there anyway to just use the XPS to import the files off of the old drive? Any help much appreciated as I've already taken down the old system and really don't want to hook it all back up. sad.gif

Thanks,
Steve

install you old hdd into your new computer (usually there are slots left for additional drives) and you can transfer them or just keep it as an additional harddisk.

I thought about this option but if any bug's are in the old system, will infect my new unit? Will Mcaffe catch it?

Edit: dbl post

It's possible, I'm a computer tech by trade. I've seen it happen but not too often. The way my old company used to restore data onto a new machine from a older machine was take the hard drive out - install it into a USB cage, copy over docs, favorites, pictures, music, desktop, outlook files, outlook express files onto the new Windows install.

I take it one step further, I usually take the entire contents of the old machine, back it up into a 'snapshot' file that can be mounted as a virtual image and copy over what I need, when I need it, this way I don't worry about getting infected by any old virus's or spyware.

What you want to do is take your old HDD out, then set the pin on the front of the drive to SLAVE.

Next grab your new PC, open it up, and insert your old HDD in along with the new one. When you boot up windows will assign your old HDD a new drive letter, and you can simply use it as a secondary drive !!!

I always used to do this, but now I have a flashy external USB 500 gig drive which I keep all my data on smile.gif

Hey Skenny,

No it dosent make any difference what OS is on the old HDD. Your new PC will just see the drive as just that a drive with files on it. Your new PC's master boot record will have no knowledge of it when your PC is starting up wink.gif

I would either buy an external drive enclosure (usb) and put that hard drive in and use it as an external one on a new computer or put the HD into the new computers case..After you copy all the files you need you can format it and have it clean...I don't beleve bugs and viruses will transfer to a new computer (its possible but highly unlikely)

That's the most useful option when I think about it, and you end up with portable drive smile.gif

external HD is also what I recommend. And if you have the latest version of antivirus and updated, you shouldn't worry. Install anti spyware as well if you haven't already.
