hi i tried a peavey valveking 100w head and peavey valveking 412 cabinet and loved it playing at guitarcenter

would the cabinet produce enough tone or lead while playing in bedroom since the volume would have to be really low

also i dont know if 212 would have the same clarity and clean tone as the 412 did

does anyone recommend any good low priced 212 cabinets

thanks

It's debatable wether a speaker on low volume will sound as good as one one that's pushed. I think not. However your ears are sensitive to loud volumes and they'd pick up the sound better on low volumes. So all in all and if you're not recording I don't think it matters.

Then of course in a huge box at low volumes the sound will travel the entire distance inside the box with significant loss. But maybe still the thickness and bottom end from the huge box will even out with a small box.

So I really don't think it's such a big deal after all.

The BIG question is if your 100 watt head will produce enough tone for bedroom playing wink.gif

I hate to break it to you, but you won't be able to get that balls-to-the-wall tube tone from a 100 watt head at bedroom levels. I have the same head and manage to play it at bedroom volumes with a 412, but this amp lives and breaths with the volume above 10 o'clock, which is WAY to loud for a bedroom. After playing at high volumes, it will sound weak at very low volumes. You'd probably be better off getting a distortion pedal if you want to play this amp at low volumes. But this is just my opinion, if you want to know what this amp will sound like at bedroom volumes, go to the store and turn the volumes knob up to a fraction over zero, not even halfway to the first dot, that is bedroom volume. You'll notice it doesn't sound anything like it does at when its louder. Of course you could consider investing in an attenuator, or throw a volume pedal in the loop, which is a much cheaper option.

By the way, the Valveking cab isn't that good, try to find a used Marshall 1960 lead series cab, which is a much better cab. Or you could consider upgrading the Valvekings speakers, as the cab itself isn't that bad from what I hear.

hey thanks for the input. I have found a nice solution.

After researching many people mentioned avatar speakers so i checked them out

For around 400ish you can get a 2x12 cabinet with celestion speakers

wow that is exactly what i am going to get. hopefully it sounds amazing with the peavey valveking 100w head that i am going to receive shortly
used for about 300 bucks.

Yeah, if you live in the US. I wanted one a few years ago but they didn't ship to Europe. Supposed to be greats cabs.
Still you've got the problem of a 100 watt amp in a bedroom but that wasn't your original question so I guess it's all good now smile.gif

the ones who've tried the Egnater Tweaker speak highly of it. I'd definitly have a closer look at it.

If the 2x12 cab and 4x12 cab are both being pushed by a 100w head you won't hear a difference in VOLUME. The 4x12 will be LOUDER. A lot of people confuse VOLUME with LOUDNESS.

With that said, I think 2x12 cabs are perfect and I never came close to utilizing the full potential of a 4x12 cab, even when I gigged with it regularly... it's just too LOUD for most stages. When cranked I literally couldn't tolerate the LOUDNESS in my studio.

My recommendation would be to get an attenuator so you can run all the tubes hot (for full warmth and tone) but drop the signal to the speakers for bedroom level VOLUME and LOUDNESS.

I took a look at the egnater tweaker. it was a nice option, but i am deciding to go with a smilar option.

The Blackstar Ht-5 impressed me.

Thanks Micke for your input, i would have been stuck with a 100w head in my house but this smaller option works superb

I believe HT5 Blackstar will definitely be a good option for bedroom playing. It has similar character as Valveking, but more natural tone, and it is suitable head for bedroom with 5 watts. The potential problem can be if you want to gig with it. It's not made for that, but you could pass in a very small club, next to a drummer that knows what it means playing soft.

You could always drive your signal before it gets to the amp. But if you are bent on using the head for distortion/gain at bedroom levels, try something called a VARI-AC which will allow you to adjust the voltage being fed to the amp and make it work much harder allowing you to get better gain/distortion/tone at much lower levels. Eddy VanHalen used one to great effect.

Here is on on Ebay

Sure smile.gif I have a Blackstar HT-5 and it's great. I miss a reverb but just add a reverb or delay pedal and you're good.
What's so good about it is that it sounds so well on low volume. Cranked up there are better amps imho but I use mine in the bedroom too so for that purpose it's one of the best amps around.

Yeah, but wasn't EVH blowing amps on a regular basis because of this? I've heard he got several amps connected so that if one blew the next would kick in automatically to make a seemless amps switch biggrin.gif
