Hello everyone, im having a problem when trying to get good tones for these lessons. Im trying to get a sound such as in "the love song solo", Muris Varajic's solos, Blind Guardian style lesson, Melodic Piece in E Minor. and so on. When playing songs that are clean i can get really nice sounds out of my guitar and amp etc. but when i try to get a sound like these its not quite up to par at all.

So can anyone suggest me some amp settings, ideas, etc.

I also can spend around $50-125 dollars on new pedals or the such.

Gear
Ibanez rg370dx
Hughes and Kettner Edition Blue 60DFX

EHX Metal muff w/top boost
Digitech rp150

I just need a good sound for solos like that. thanks!

I don't know the amp that you are using, but this is a problem that many amps have. Specially a lot of those modeling amps sound VERY good in clean modes, but as soon as it comes to high gain stuff the sound is not really that great anymore. A lot of people also make the mistake to tweak the gain to the absolute maximum, which only results in a muddy, completely overdistorted sound, when you want to record distorted guitars you should experiment a bit with your level of distortion. Set it to a rather low setting, record a track, and the double it. You will be surprised to see that the sound gets much more powerfull again and seems to me more distorted that it actually is.

Well you want to try to make a distortion sound on your amps lead channel..Just experiment more with EQ and Gain settings starting from flat positions...Main things is as Marcus said , not to overdo it!

Marcus is 100% right, and I agree, while recording it is often much better to record with less overdrive than usually (while playing) and then double tracks. It really makes the sound bolder, and lot more defined and concrete.

go 65% gain and add some reverb or delay (both?)
That'll change things, I promise you.

And btw, muris plays with tube amps and expensive guitars, and has great playing fingers. these matter the most tongue.gif

The problem may not even be the amp it could be how you're playing.

Sorry if I might cue the topic bit off track, :S
but I know that feeling! And everytime I see it discussed, most the replies includes to equalize the amp with all kinds of knobs that my amp does not feature happy.gif All the time looking at my amp despairingly for all the secret knobs but only still see Bass, Mid, Treble, Vol.. uh uh ..
I'm not sure, but when my amp is so limited.. What pedal effects does that call for? I got recommended the good 'ol Boss DS-1 by my real-life guitar teacher that I see once in a while (he's an expensive man) and been playing with that so far, but that's not very versatile alone either.

I got recommended the EHX that SnoCone have, but thats not really for anything else than metal is it tongue.gif (I'm quite impressed by the Metal Muff for metal/thrash stuff, though)

Im looking for a pedal (or two in combination) that really can do some allround stuff, like Sno says, sound good with some solo pieces too.. And I really dig that 70-80 heavy metal sound both riffing and soloing.. The old school like Sammy Hagar, Judas Priest and the like. Im not really into the technical details or how to combine different effects, but I've looked at tons and tons of pedal demo's and I really can't find out how to make old school heavy sound.
My gear consists of Cort EVL X4 guitar; Boss DS-1 pedal; Trace-Elliot Boxer Amp.

I absolutely share this opinion !!!! and I'd like to add that if record 2 guitars in right channel and 2 guitars in left channel it will sound bestial !!!! hehe wink.gif 4 rhythm guitars will sound really powerfull, but remember you would be to nail every note ...

hehe, true, the more takes you record, the more precise you will have to be, otherwise the recording will be very chaotic and not tight anymore.

Pretty much all of Muris' lessons are recorded through his Pandora though aren't they?

Not sure what a pandora is buddy, but it sounds like it's atleast a tube preamp.
