Get An Amp? Options

Hey guys
I use Axe FX

But I used my friend marshall for a while and there is something special about a real amp.
Its more powerful I think but maybe im wrong.

But what is great about axe fx its all in one that i like.
All the sounds possible, in a box i can record with, play along with, have on my desktop, get the same tone live etc.

Is this achiveable with an amp?
I need to use headphones sometimes and I really want the amp on my recordings and have it put with the same sound source as the project im working on

I think you already have the answer to this one.

Go the Axe FX route!

What you have described is what the Axe FX is excellent for. Yes - it is different than a real amp but for that kind of flexibility, portability and work efficiency - I don't think you can beat it.

Real amp is cool for many reasons too but its a whole different approach. For recording you would need to use a Mic, special treated room, very good pre amp, audio interface etc... Tone you get through the mic will always be slightly different due to mic positioning, amp settings etc. Tone of the amp when recording and playing live will be completely different and you would need to set different settings live depending on the club etc (even though you might try to get the same tone from home and know the settings for that one). Some amps have headphones out but it doesn't sound amazing.

Playing real amp does have its benefits - the tone, dynamics and the simple plug in and fun of adjusting it.
For Axe FX you'd need some nice PA system or monitors to get enjoyable tone at home while amp has a built in speaker made for it.

Having said all this - I think this is a matter of taste. If you like your current guitar tone and music recording/producing/practicing environment and workflow, no need to change it really. Both solutions have pros and cons and are very different workflows so its a matter of taste in the end.

You might try using a TUBE power amplifier with your axe fx Or even a tube preamp before the axe fx input, or both Basically putting some tubeyness back in your signal chain might give you what you are looking for.

But yea, from what you describe you need, your an axe fx guy
