If by straight you mean the first (index) finger is not fretting but rather straight across all (or or many) strings similar to a barre chord, then the answer is that we're muting the other strings with that one.

Just try to practice with your index like that all the time, and after a while it will show in your playing no problem.

Yes, that's because of the noise, but you can also cover that with your right hand!
