Nice, I had an S once, traded it for my RG1570.

One Ibby I'd like is an R540 but they're like rocking horse muck. sad.gif

Good trade up!! I'd love a 540p as well. It's the original Skonlnick axe. There is one rare bird with the Testament art work from practice what you preach. I think there were 2 made. Even the standard models can fetch a few grand. There are a LOT of fakes out there so you gotta be careful. These are rare as hens teeth.

I didn't know about that guitar Todd, it's a 540R I'd like, I remember seeing this advert before I knew who Satriani was and seeing that aerofoil shape that made me want one. I know that this eventually became the JS series. At one time I think the Radius and JS models were running side by side but now the Radius has been completely superseded by the JS.

They are both based on the original Sabre Series. The body is smaller and has more rounded corners and horns. This one has a Mahoagany body which is my fave tone wood. It does make the guitar quite heavy for it's size though but the sustain is great. My RGT42 neck through is also Mahogany and it's got unGodly sustain. I love MIJ Ibbys and I"ve got a copule, but they are just so crazy pricey i've started looking for non MIJ guitars that have good features. This guy was only $300 so the price was right wink.gif

Info on this one
https://ibanez.fandom.com/wiki/S470_(1995%E...%932001,_Korea)

There is a MIJ version with the original Wizard neck last built in 1997 that I'm hunting for.

I actualy like these. They are pre INF. Also I'm an ibby purist corksniffer so I don't ever mod my Ibbys. They are all bone stock. I have nothing against making a guitar better, I'm just more of a collector of bone stock ibbys and if the pups are crap I just work around it in processing.

You know what I hated about my S? As soon as I took it out of the box my eyes went straight to the fine tuners on the trem. The finish was shocking, they had obviously been machined with no quality in mind, the lathe tool that faced the head was traversing much too fast for the spindle revs of the machine (using a low cost machine with slow spindle speed but still traversing as you would on a more expensive machine with a higher spindle speed). This leaves a horrible spiral scroll. That was disappointing for me as it was my first Ibby and I always thought that they only produced excellence. They all looked like the primary rough stock removal machining had been done but not the finishing pass.

The life and times of being an engineer eh? rolleyes.gif

Many of the S series are not MIJ, was this one you are speaking of made in Japan? Generally the MIJ ibbys are quite well finished. The indo/korea ibbys are sometimes not quite up to scratch which is why ibby fans often snub them. They make great starter guitars, but can be hit or miss compared to MIJ ibbys. I've got a couple of non MIJ ibbys and I've had a couple that I've sent back as they didn't quite hit the mark for me. I've kept 2 that are in fine shape especially considering they are several decades old wink.gif with non MIJ you really have to just check each one and see if it's a keeper.

Also, being an engineer yourself, and one with an eye for detail on all things, your a tough customer. smile.gif

It was around £500 not MIJ but I'd never had an Ibanez before and just expected more at any price. Even if I was making a £100 guitar, I couldn't put my name to the way those tuners were machined.

Ive never seen one that bad. Even an indo/korean! You may have gotten a bit scammed and someone replaced them with crappy bits from a cheaper guitar and just swapped them out. Just guessing. But yeah, i've owned a LOT of ibbys and never seen tuners that bad.

It was brand new from a respected dealer/shop and I bought it mail order.

Egad. That's seriously not good. Like i mentioned, I've never seen one that bad. But you may have higher standards being a machinist/engineer. smile.gif
