Hello folks,

I'm going to put 10s back on my SRV Strat, I had 12s on but an injury sustained while it was at the luthier having it set for 12s at full step down tuning seems to have caused some permanent nerve damage, which means I can't bend the 12s if I tune up to standard tuning.

I will be using it for standard, down half step and down full step tuning. Would I be best to set it to suit half step down tuning allowing tuning up and down or what do you recommend?

Thanks for looking

Phil

I didn't understand what you mean by nerve damage? are you hurt or is it about the guitar being damaged?

Are you gonna use 10s (or 9s)? It probably won't make a difference truss rod wise.
Set the truss for whichever tuning you think you'll use more often. On the off chance that the guitar does react adversely to the tension changes then that's just something you have to deal with.
*Generally speaking, guitars do not like to have their tension constantly changed. They need to settle in.

I have nerve damage that makes it hard to bend the strings, do vibrato and do big stretches. I'm hoping eventually it will go but its been around 12 months now, I couldn't even play for a few weeks at first.

Thanks Ken,

Probably standard 80% of the time, half step 15% and whole step 5% so I'll set it for standard. Wouldn't be so bad but the neck has to come off to adjust it.

Cheers

Oh sorry to head that sad.gif

Yes adjusting to standard 0.10 should be fine. But leave it at the luthier 1-2 days to make sure the neck settles.

Sorry to hear your injury is causes issues but hopefully dropping a gauge will do the trick along with lowering the tune half a step. Lowering the tune half a step is a good way to get back some bendyness in the strings. I remember Kris used to tune his parker down half a step and I did it with an ESP I had that didn't play well at standard. Just half a step though and bends and vibrato would much more workable.

As you already know, I use yngwie sets on my Ibbys which are .08 but they are a far cray from the tone you want on your SRV.

Thanks, my luthier isn't working at the moment, he had a stroke, you wouldn't believe it, he is about 60kg (132lbs) and only in his forties. He's okay but still gets very very tired very quickly. I'm going to do it myself. He can remember how much he turned the truss screw so that's a starting point for me. I got some D"Addario Balanced Tension 10s to try. I've always used Ernie Ball so I thought I'd try something new.

Seems similar to my age and weight, maybe I should start taking care of myself better too...

Health is tricky! As I mentioned in another thread I've gained a lot of weight over the last 7 years while taking some medication. 110 lbs gained. When I was 220 lbs I was able to play football, go for long racing bicycle rides etc. I was never skinny, but I was fit smile.gif Not anymore, that's for sure! Trying to get healthy again, but it's a long road!

Well the strings are on, gave it a good clean, lemon oiled the fretboard, adjusted the truss by 1/8 turn, adjusted trem springs, intonation seems fine.

Surprisingly I didn't have a single problem with the vintage tuners and strings popping out, went live a dream.

Nice, Phil! It's always a nice feeling being able to sort these things out by yourself.

Yes and I did it properly. I usually kneel on the floor but I put it on a table, got my neck rest and sat on the settee doing it in comfort. Didn't rush it, took my time, took about an hour with putting everything away afterwards. Quite therapeutic really.

As long as it doesn't get frustrating then fiddling with things like this can be therapeutic for sure. I installed a new CPU cooler in my PC the other day, and I tell you, that was NOT therapeutic. Damn fans for the CPU cooler wouldn't go in place no matter how hard I tried with the clamps/clips. One side kept not being right. Eventually after about 2 hours of installation of the whole thing, getting the old one out, replacing it with the new one, I had got it in place, but about 1 hour of that time was spent trying to get a damn clip to go in place. I was so close to giving up laugh.gif

Oops! In my old computer I had a Noctua NH14 cooler, which I for some reason have thrown out, and it was very easy to install and to clip on the fans. I went for a cheaper Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo this time, and I'm not sure if it was a good choice or if getting a Noctua again would have been better.

Those clips were a pain to get on, especially as there wasn't really space to get my hand in there, let alone see anything. They kept jumping off in one side, out of the socket etc laugh.gif

Yeah, many times I have nearly thrown the computer through the window with those clips, especially when you slip and think you've damaged the motherboard huh.gif

Had water cooling at one time, expensive but virtually silent computer. I used these productshttps://shop.aquacomputer.de/index.php?cPath=7

Yeah, I was considering getting water cooling. This one I got is silent enough for me though. My next computer will probably have water cooling, but that will be hopefully in 2024 or so. I hope my current one will run for another 3 years smile.gif

Ahhh buddy, you can't send her back, you've wanted that guitar for sooooo long, it will be fixable even if it has to go to a pro shop. You'll regret getting rid of her for sure.
