Years ago I played a Dumble modded 1964 Fender 'Concert Reverb' (4x10" combo) that was a house amp at a recording studio in Los Angeles. It was of the 'cleaner' voiced variety of the Dumble sound. Just a big, fat, loud Fender clean tone. A little more mids than usual. I didn't use any OD pedal into it as I was just playing rhythm. It sounded great.

No $150,000.00 amp necessary. In software, the Fuchs 'Overdrive Supreme' 50 by Brainworks (via both UA and Plugin Alliance I think) sounds f'n great and it's $149.00 (less than most of the D style pedals). *Andy Fuchs by the way has Mr. Dumble's blessing for making clones (hardware and software). Thanks for the info. Yeah, these amps have become mythical and sorta "Unicorn" like. I've heard that prices can go up to six figures. I thought that sounded just insane. The Stevie Ray Vaughn tone though a dumble is also a thing of beauty as he used one of the overdrive special amps. These things seem to grown in reputation over time sorta like the KLON overdrive pedals which cost 2k each, if you can find one.
Your point is well taken about being able to get great tone without spending a mortgage worth of money on an amp. To wit, here is an actual DUMBLE in a shootout with an ultraphonix pedal. As is often said, "Tone is in the fingers" and I think great players can sound great even on really bad gear, but great gear never hurts. Which one A or B do you guys like in this clip? I say B is the amp and I said that before I looked at the comments.
In the comments it's unclear but 'I think' they intimate that B is indeed the amp. What makes me say B is really just the low end information. There's a harmonic richness/thickness down there that I've never gotten with a pedal. Having said that, I actually prefer the top end of what I'll assume is the Vertex pedal. *I've tried the Vertex Ultra-phonix and I didn't really dig it overall because it compressed too much. That doesn't work for me live because I play lower wattage amps that break up early. *One of the things that needs to be noted is that he's playing it, the pedal, into a really great tube amp. A Jim Kelly SCR (single ch reverb) 60 watt head. Almost as 'boutique' as a Dumble in that he didn't really make that many. An SCR head goes for upwards of 3 grand used.
