These amps are mythical and crazy pricey. The thread about playing real amps got me thinking about these. I've only seen one of them. EVER. It was priced about 3,000 U.S. dollars is memory serves, just for a little combo amp. Seemed insane. Folks do love these though and it's almost a unicorn. Who has actually tried one?

Years ago I played a Dumble modded 1964 Fender 'Concert Reverb' (4x10" combo) that was a house amp at a recording studio in Los Angeles. It was of the 'cleaner' voiced variety of the Dumble sound. Just a big, fat, loud Fender clean tone. A little more mids than usual. I didn't use any OD pedal into it as I was just playing rhythm. It sounded great.
Since all D amps are made to order (every - single - one of them), there are no two that are alike.

Was it as magical as people say? I hear so many folks just gush over these things?

Any well maintained mid 50s to mid 60s Fender amp is 'magical' IMO.
This was at least 20 years ago. At the time, the Dumble mystique wasn't what it is today. Plus, he lived/lives(?) in LA, Silverlake to be exact. They were known as expensive, somewhere in the 5 to 12 grand range depending on what you wanted. And yeah, it sounded great.
It should be known that he modded a ton of Fender amps. Mostly Blonde, Brown and Black tolex models from the 60s (fabulous amps to start with).
Sort of glossed over in the Rhett Shull vid is the fact that the most famous D amp tone is what he heard and wanted to duplicate when he saw Robben Ford playing through a cranked Fender Bassman with an OD or boost pedal in front of it. Robben was playing at that time, a 1959 (sunburst) es335. *1959 ES 335s are equally as sought after and potentially magical as the '59 LPs.

For the record, I saw Robben Ford play many many times throughout the 80s and 90s in small clubs out here. He even had steady, 2-nights per week gigs. Mostly, he played through two Deluxe Reverbs split by either a Lexicon or Eventide stereo delay/harmonizer and I think he had a Tube Screamer, a wah and a volume pedal. And guess what ... he sounded EXACTLY like Robben Ford. He was also usually playing his custom RF model Fender guitar ... https://www.12fret.com/instruments/fender-r...ord-model-1993/

If you have a semi-hollow thin line, a Fender voiced amp, one of the myriad D-tone pedals and you play RF licks - you'll get that sound. No $150,000.00 amp necessary.

In software, the Fuchs 'Overdrive Supreme' 50 by Brainworks (via both UA and Plugin Alliance I think) sounds f'n great and it's $149.00 (less than most of the D style pedals). *Andy Fuchs by the way has Mr. Dumble's blessing for making clones (hardware and software). Same thing regarding his affiliation with Ken Fischer (RIP) of Train Wreck amps.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, these amps have become mythical and sorta "Unicorn" like. I've heard that prices can go up to six figures. I thought that sounded just insane. The Stevie Ray Vaughn tone though a dumble is also a thing of beauty as he used one of the overdrive special amps. These things seem to grown in reputation over time sorta like the KLON overdrive pedals which cost 2k each, if you can find one.

Your point is well taken about being able to get great tone without spending a mortgage worth of money on an amp. To wit, here is an actual DUMBLE in a shootout with an ultraphonix pedal. As is often said, "Tone is in the fingers" and I think great players can sound great even on really bad gear, but great gear never hurts. Which one A or B do you guys like in this clip? Can you tell which is the DUMBLE AMP and which is the PEDAL?

I say B is the amp and I said that before I looked at the comments.
In the comments it's unclear but 'I think' they intimate that B is indeed the amp.
What makes me say B is really just the low end information. There's a harmonic richness/thickness down there that I've never gotten with a pedal. Having said that, I actually prefer the top end of what I'll assume is the Vertex pedal. *I've tried the Vertex Ultra-phonix and I didn't really dig it overall because it compressed too much. That doesn't work for me live because I play lower wattage amps that break up early.

*One of the things that needs to be noted is that he's playing it, the pedal, into a really great tube amp. A Jim Kelly SCR (single ch reverb) 60 watt head. Almost as 'boutique' as a Dumble in that he didn't really make that many. An SCR head goes for upwards of 3 grand used. Plug the vertex into a Guitar Center standard issue Hot Rod Deluxe and then lets do the shootout.

It was a trick question. NObody can afford that amp so the vid is just the pedal smile.gif Clever eh? Jerks.

Your point you made about the player being a big part of it and that any decent gear can be made to sound just about as good is even more resonant after this pedal vid imho.

Ha, ha! Really? Does it say that somewhere in the comments? They show an ODS combo in the vid.

Yeah, they save it for the end, but yup, they just come out and say they couldn't afford one and so they used it to just make a point that the pedal sounds nice. smile.gif

In the video, at the end when they say, "the pedal, not the amp - we can't afford the amp", they're talking about the giveaway. As in if you comment, you're eligible to win a pedal (and not the amp). *They show a real ODS getting plugged into in the vid.
I say the real amp is B.

Ahh. That would be my bad. I misunderstood them at the end. It did sound different, so I was a bit thrown. Makes perfect sense now. Good eye!
