Ok i looked back at Kris' how to practice guitar lesson earlier and was just wondering if i could split a practice schedule. So what i mean is, Kris said to have 1/3 of your practicing on techniques, 1/3 on improvising and 1/3 on learning something new or practice the new material. So let's say i wanted to spend 3 hours a day practicing, could i spend an hour practicing the techniques part, take a break from guitar for so an hour or so and come back and practice improvising for an hour then go away and come back later to learn new material? Is this a good idea or is it better to just practice for 3 hours straight?

Of course this is just as doable, and a fine idea for practicing.

Dedicating yourself to a planned period of practice time is the best way of progressing with your guitar playing, so as long as you stick to a plan of "An hour of this, then an hour of this and then an hour of this" instead of "Three hours guitar playing!" you'll do just fine.

Taking breaks in your practicing is pretty important, (well atleast for me). Its pretty individual on how long.
It depends on what you're practicing too of course.
But lets say you've set an hour to work on your techniques.
Something that i find effective is by taking 10-15 minutes and learning/working a technique or exercise.
Then take a break and do something completly different for a while. And after that you practise the same thing 10-15mins.

While having you're break you allow the exercise to grow in your subconsciousness.
Especially if you're practicing a new pattern that your muscles need to remember.
This process is great to use when learning new songs/lessons. Its better to let it sink in then to overdo it.
Dont know if this made any sense to you, but this is the way i do it anyway smile.gif

Well taking breaks sound good to me.As long as you practice 3 hours in total its great routine ! That break you take will give your mind time to relax and "process" what he just learned..Its a good idea..Just make a practice list for a week and try to keep up with it.. wink.gif
