Okay she eventually added a few pedals Dahl in but would you do away with your peak board /multi fx?

I enjoy going straight into my Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue sometimes, but I don't think it's do away with my fx. I'm not a working guitarist though but it would be interesting to hear your opinions.

I think it Depends on the style you play.
If you play blues its much easier to use less pedals then all sorts of styles.
I think its hard to play metal with a fender deluxe reverb :')

I think its good to play with a good clean tone and a little bit reverb and practice to get a beautifull sound.
But sometimes pedals can be a nice addition but it can also suck your tone smile.gif
For me i would't play with a pedalboard but sometimes i also rely a bit too much on it and it would be great to practice more with just an amp 😎

Yeah, there's something special, almost organic about playing through a good amp, sometimes I can lose an hour improvising to a slow blues E minor backing with my SRV Strat and the Fender amp, it just feels so sweet. cool.gif

I haven't really read the article, so just a quick glance on your post is what I'm replying to.

An interesting take is how Tesseract (and probably others) have a midi-programmed setup for live use, where they don't press pedals to change patch etc. At least in the past they did that. It's pre-programmed. I.e. song starts, click track runs through a DAW live, you have midi set up to auto-switch to the patch used for clean, rhythm, solo etc. whenever needed and it just all runs through the DAW. Very easy to set up actually, and I'm suprised it's not used more. Relatively easy anyway. You just have your song set up with the markers, sections or whatever, then at say 2:13 you program a switch from "rhythm guitar" to "lead guitar" that handles the switch for you when you reach that point of the song. And since everyone is on the same click track and DAW it all lines up for everyone.

I'd do it that way. No need to worry about dancing around on pedals, which has never interested me that much.

About 14:25 or so in this video:

I think for a home use environment its pretty sweet but i think its hard to use it live.
What if some one makes a mistake. Or you decide to play a chorus 2 more times because the vibe is pretty good smile.gif
Or you change the setlist at the moment because the crowd isnt responding well on some style of music.

For me the reawon i don't play with a multi fx is because you have to programm ut that much.
If i want delay i want to tap delay and get it etc....
But its also what you used to i think..

The setlist can still always be changed during the gig, I reckon. There's still some initiation on starting the songs and I think they're somewhat individually started and not part of a "locked" setlist. I understand your sentiment in regards to playing a chorus one more time etc., but I don't think at least in this genre that it's very common. I don't remember ever having heard that in progressive rock or metal, I think.

They explain that they make less mistakes this way, in the video, as you don't accidenately turn on the delay at a wrong moment or put a distortion preset on a clean part etc.

Here's another similar video:

Yup, I think my point is also that less focus on patches switching or pedals means maybe more focus on the performance itself.

I've never used many pedals or setting changes. Usually my setup consists of only 3 presets, "Rhythm" (distortion), "Clean" and "Solo Lead. And I'm all for moving focus away from these things like focusing on the aspects around presets, i.e. jumping around on pedals, so you can put 100% into your playing.

Yes i think your Wright.
I know a lot of drummers also play with a click track.
For me i think i would get distracted by hearing a click all the time.

There are many ways to do it anyway. Be that with a click, a different sound, click indications i.e. not there all the time, but indicating certain changes, parts or just have the click on every 1st beat of the bar, but maybe on every beat in the bar leading up to a new section. I don't know what is actually used in live situations for all bands, but it made me think about the different possibilities if nothing else.

A normal click sound can be annoying, for sure, but you can usually change what sound the click is using, which might help.

I don't believe you can "cheat" in music, but of course I can understand and see how some people can think that. Some in ear indication to the musicians could work for some people, same as you might have a prompt in another live performance (of something else) or prompter person in a theater performance. Obviously it's a different kind of live performance and depends on what you are going for. In an live improv-jazz session of course it would be different and so on.

It's interesting though and made me think of the possibilities. I don't like playing live on stage and never really wanted to or was interested in it, but part of the stumbling blocks were my lack of interest in pedals, doing all that switching, making mistakes (perfectionism) and so on, but it has made me think that some of these things can be eliminated with techniques like automatic patch switching.

Well said, it's not a card game after all so one can't really "Cheat" as such smile.gif it's nice to be able to have technology to make things smoother whether on tour or at home recording imho. Still, it's always nice to have simple setup as well when the mood strikes. I LOVE my little hotone ampero for example. It's a tiny pedal board with everything stuffed in it that I can run directly to my powered monitors and bam. Full range rig on tap with a software editor and best of all, micro pitch!!

she said " i use it as a crutch" . So it got me thinking ,

What effects do I use as a crutch.. All of them is the answer . I have to have everything just right to record, but it should no be that way , I should be able to record it without effects ? i am pondering

I always record direct, without effects. As the FX are all virtual in THU so it's really just recording a dry signal that one can "reamp" at any point during the process.

Yup, even if I do mic up my amp, I also record a DI track, so I can re-amp later. But that's of course a more "serious" thing if I'm setting up a mic, but it's always nice to have a DI too.

I'd think that's the normal approach when using plugins. You have it running, but you still only record the dry signal, as you're not "burning" the plugin's sound into the track. I'm almost sure that's what Todd means too, but I could be wrong smile.gif

me too!!! Thats' why I LOVE THU!!! smile.gif It lets me hear all of the effects but doesn't burn them in to the track. Ben nailed it!! We even used the same phrase. I just noticed that.

Ahh, it came across to me as though Todd plays clean when recording and adds effects afterwards, I'm probably completely wrong rolleyes.gif
