Hello folks,
This isn't really a request for advice, just a little story that amazed me today. I'm struggling to nail landing on the dominant 9th chord with root on the 5th string. Today I thought I'd ask my wife to try to play it, she doesn't play guitar at all, she did a bit of open chord strumming at school when she was about 10 years old and that's all. I showed her where to put her fingers using just the index, middle and ring finger, in about three tries she got all five strings ringing out I'm not saying she could land on it playing at 100bpm but she got down and ringing out. One thing she has that I don't have, Gab has it too, their ring fingers can bend the "wrong" way at the knuckle making it easier to barre the E, B and G strings. I'm getting there slowly and trying to coax my ring finger to bend both ways Anything similar ever happened to you? Doesn't have to be guitar related, maybe you'd been trying to do something for ages and your brother /sister /nephew/niece etc said, "let me have a go" and nailed it in ten minutes. Cheers Stay safe Phil -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Can't say I have a similar experience, but I don't even really play the 5th in that 9th chord. I've always struggled with that chord shape too, but if we are to leave out a note of a chord, then the 5th is generally considered the least important. Thanks Ben, I don't really have that choice, it's my current lesson https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Blues-Dynamics/ I'll give advice anyway First hold the chord you struggle with and memories it like a picture in your head for a few seconds. Then don't move your eyes, tap your knee (must make a tap sound! ) with fretting hand and return your hand to the chord slowly but here's the most important part; while lifting your hand from the knee, get your fingers into position of whatever chord you're working on. Don't touch the fretboard if your hands aren't in position. Once done slowly, speed it up. Thanks Mertay, I'll try that but it's a tricky one to finger in fresh air, for me anyway. -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Thanks Ben, I don't really have that choice, it's my current lesson https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Blues-Dynamics/ Ah, I see! He uses his pinky though for the D on the 10th fret, doesn't he? So you'd only need to bar the F and A (G and B string), right? |

As Storm just noted, I don't think the teacher in the vid is actually doing it either.
*It can be tough to impossible depending on one's physiology. My fingers don't really bend backwards either but I really loved James Brown so I had to learn that 9th chord. This post has been edited by klasaine: May 8 2021, 06:42 PM -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Ah, I see! He uses his pinky though for the D on the 10th fret, doesn't he? So you'd only need to bar the F and A (G and B string), right? Yeah he does but he can probably play it both ways. I was trying it that and struggling and Gab recommended using the ring finger to bar all three strings, this leaves the pinky free to add notes once flexibility is in the hands, hopefully I'll be able to play it both ways eventually Cheers This post has been edited by Phil66: May 8 2021, 06:50 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. I'm somewhat "double jointed" as they say so my fingers can be very bendy

Yeah, I never found a use for that either, though I can only do it with my index fingers.

Yeah, I never found a use for that either, though I can only do it with my index fingers. Welcome to the club Ben, you're the only person I know apart from me that can bend just the top knuckle and keep the rest straight. I can do it on the other fingers but my middle fingers almost get a full right angle. -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. I discovered mine during a Kung Fu lesson when I was a kid, we had to stand there, hands in blocking position and stomach tensed while the instructor delivered a few kicks from the side into our stomachs

I've always had pretty good flexibility in fingers/hands/joints which did help as i was started to work on increasing my stretch for guitar.
