... Before checking for harmony books, you'll need to be comfortable with some theory though. You don't need to know all the scale types but you have to be comfortable atleast with 7 type chords. Building them, identifying inversions of them...not super fast on calculation but some comfort is needed. Harmony basically takes each note of a chord and tries to determine how they can spread to build new and "good" sounding chords with-in a song. Tab to me isn't friendly when learning this, notation visually is much better when practicing. I learned harmony from piano (classical music style) and though play guitar with tab's, always reach for a pencil and paper when I want to analyze something. Keep this video lesson in-mind and buy it one day; https://truefire.com/guitar-lessons/solo-handbook/c1244 The guy takes the song amazing grace, and with each section adds different chords to make it sound more and more jazzy (yeah its a jazz guitar lesson). His explanations are the most practical I've ever came by for a lesson video. It may be a bit advanced for your level now (maybe around the second section) but you might find it inspiring and helpful to clear-up your understanding of theory-harmony. |
