ok i'm wondering about strumming when looking at tabs, like with how many strings to strum
for instance when you look at the G5 chord

e| - - - - - |
b| - - - - - |
g| - - - - - |
d| - - - - - |
a| - - - 5 - |
e| - 3 - - - |

you are only strumming those two strings right?

thanks,
Dave

that would not be a G5 chord that you used as an example - A chord will always have multiple notes lined up vertically like this:

b| - - - - - |
g| - - - - - |
d| - - - - - |
a| - 5 - - - |
e| - 3 - - - |

and you only strum the strings where ther is a a note shown in that vertical alignment.

there is a tutorial on Tabs which wiill help you with this. under Andrew's theory section of the forum.

If you need to strum some open strings too , they will show up in the vertical line with other notes as 0.

Something like this :

b| - 0 - - - |
g| - - - - - |
d| - 0 - - - |
a| - 5 - - - |
e| - 3 - - - |

Also if you need to block and mute certain strings it will show as - x.

b| - 3 - - - |
g| - x - - - |
d| - x - - - |
a| - 5 - - - |
e| - 3 - - - |

Actually this:

e| - - - - - |
b| - - - - - |
g| - - - - - |
d| - - - - - |
a| - - - 5 - |
e| - 3 - - - |

is not strumming these two notes together, it means stumm G first and them D.

This means strumm them together, when they are in the same vertical alignment:

e| - - - - - |
b| - - - - - |
g| - - - - - |
d| - - - - - |
a| - 5 - - - |
e| - 3 - - - |
