Toneport Ux2?

I have decided that I'm definitely going to get the toneport ux2 to record some stuff that I do. I have all the software and other things already, but I have one question: On some peoples recordings, I find that it is extremely offputting as the computer plays what you played a second after you played it. There is a delay between when you play the note and when the computer has recorded it. Can this be avoided at all?

Any answers will be appreciated, try to reply fast if you can...

cheers

Nathan

Well the latency from what you play until its recorded on the computer is not really good but on the other hand the latency to the monitoring of what you play is next to nothing. It kind of splits the sound sending it to the computer for recording and to the monitors at the same time so you dont have to wait for the computer to hear what you play.

I put an order in for a Toneport UX1 several weeks ago online.
The vendor emailed me to tell me that there would be a delay as he was out of stock.
He gave me 3 options.
-Put the UX1 on back order & wait.
-Canel my order
-or for $20 extra he would send me the UX2 version so I didn't have to wait.

I opted for the UX2!!

I have now had it for a total of 3 days & I am totally speechless at how good this thing is!!
I certainly have no latency issues that I can hear.

About 2 hours ago I recorded the very first lead break I have ever played with backing music.
I was working through the tutorial on Ableton & the whole thing took me by surprise.
I thought I would just be recording myself on the guitar as a test but the backing track fired up.
Luckily I was in key, so I just jammed along for a minute or so.
Even though I was unprepared & hit a few bad notes, I can't get over how cool it sounds. cool.gif
This has opened up a whole new avenue of enjoyment for me as far as playing guitar goes.
I'm just so stoked I can't put it into words. biggrin.gif

Now I'm just trying to figure out how to convert the .wav or .aiff files into mp3 so I can dump it into my iPod! laugh.gif

To use recording terminology - Try to reply with zero latency :-)

In your recording program one should select the audio drivers to be ASIO. This is the option to avoid latency, hence the recorded sound appears f.ex 200ms after if was played.

The drivers could be called just ASIO or UX2 ASIO etc. Just look for anything with ASIO in it and add as your sequencer audio drivers after the audio interface is installed to get sound without any delay. There could be a slight theoretical and/or practical latency anyway but we're talking about figures like ~3ms

Willing to share your recording? wink.gif I'm interested in the sound of the recording. I ordered my Toneport UX too but I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Yeah, I have no problem with doing that.
Please bear in mind though that it was the very first thing I recorded & I was only expecting to play maybe a 20 second lick to see how it recorded. When the backing track started I just kept playing along, so it's a bit repetetive, not structured at all & there are several dud notes. blink.gif

Having said that though, it will give you a good idea of how it performs. I haven't tweaked anything & was just using one of the standard preset amp models in Gearbox & the tutorial backing track for guitar recording in Ableton Live Lite 6.

The other thing is the file is about 29Mb, so I'd like to find a way convert it to mp3 or something that would bring the size down. (I'd lose patience trying to upload it long before it was finished. rolleyes.gif ) Can anyone offer suggestions here?

Nice one, Ivan.

Well, here it is. Not really looking for any feedback but feel free to post any comments/criticisms.
I'm only posting it here for sammy_k to hear how the Toneport goes.

sammy_k - I was using the British Metal preset amp model & the only thing I did to the recording was add some subtle stereo panning in Ableton. Apart from that it is pretty much exactly how it sounded as it was being recorded. (I think mp3 files lack a little bit of tone quality. Not a great deal though.)

There was no noticable latency. I start a second or so after the backing & finish a second late only because I wasn't prepared for it & wasn't paying attention to the progress of the backing track. It caught me by surprise when it started & also when it finished. hahahah.

Thanks for posting your recording. I have a good idea now of what to expect from the Toneport, especially when putting it aside the other recordings I found on the net. I'm looking forward to the arrival of the toneport, I should have it after the weekend. Can't wait to try it out. Thanks again!
