Hi guys,

In January this year I damaged my right side ear drum in an accident involving an ear wax removal tool.

I have used such tool for many years, but I was under stress and used way too much pressure. I blew out the ear drum with air pressure.

Up to this point doctors have told me it will heal but now that is apparently no longer the case. I am awaiting time for surgery.

This does not affect me that much in every day life, but it killed my desire to mix in stereo since I have like a built-in phase issue now 😔

Hopefully the surgery will get me back on track!

Thanks for reading 👊

Kris, I'm really sorry to hear this. sad.gif

Usually these kinds of problems heal in weeks. If you need surgery, it's obvious that you damaged your ear drum very seriously.

Do you made an audiology exam to see how well you hear at different pitches and volumes?

I have learned now there are much safer ways to do it though...

Yes, according to them it's not that bad compared to the other ear.

But I have a constant tinnitus style ringing now + I have always had issues with loads of ear wax. And now I am not allowed to remove it since that would potentially blow in bacteria into my brain and cause an inflammation. So I feel pretty deaf on it with constant ringing.

I used to more "aggressively" use these, which is not good either, but I grew up with a mom adamant that you need to clean your ears good and well:

...I then got an infection some years back first in one ear for 3 weeks, and then 2 weeks on the other ear (overlapping by one week). Doctor said I need to not use those and be a lot more gentle. "You can only clean the ear wax you can reach with your little finger". I'm not sure my mom would like that!

I thought the one you show above (that uses water) were supposed to be better, but that may just be in comparison laugh.gif The doctor told me to just come by their office once every half a year or so to get a good cleaning. I don't build up much ear wax though, so it's not been a problem.

Better to be extra careful with our ears smile.gif

I know a person who has sort of a similar "injury" that you do, though I don't think it came about the same way. He says in one of his ears everything is muffled, like if things were played under a blanket. But the other ear is fine. I think he's gotten used to it, but I can see how it can be a problem when mixing songs.

Sorry to hear this, let's hope the surgery goes well. I have constant ringing in both ears, too many rock concerts, racetracks and metal cutting workshops, don't think there's much I can do now.

On a medical note, a lot of ear specialists say "Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear". https://www.hearingaidknow.com/nothing-smal...than-your-elbow

All the best.

Yes, that's exactly how it is. The high-end is totally gone on that ear.

So true!

Unfortunately the method of cleaning the ear was recommended to me a by a specialist (!)

I have never liked high volume concerts or even normal amps, I always play my amp with an attenuator.

Turns out I get to experience tinnitus anyway.

Well, that's no good if you're a sharp-elbowed person! laugh.gif

I hope you find a good solution smile.gif

I don't like playing my amp loud either - or anything for that matter. My IronHeart amp has a built in attenuator, so I use that as well at times, though I don't use my amp that often these days. I need to, cause it's still kinda cool playing a tube amp, even at lower volume cool.gif

Very sorry to hear this. sad.gif I lost a good bit of the hearing in my right ear due to playing live and using way to much stage volume when i was younger. I had a hearing test a bit back and sure enough, big damage. As a result, i've had to try to adapt my mixing style to work around it. I will often mix in mono, and then I will switch the left/right during a mix so that i can hear it with my good ear on both sides of a mix.

You only get one set of ears and one set of hands folks. Take care of em smile.gif

Todd

Thanks a lot for the well wishes guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I am really anxious to get the surgery done. After that it will be a 3 month wait to see if the eardrum heals.

Sorry to hear that Todd, and yes - if surgery doesn't work this is likely how I will try to get around it.

Couldn't agree more about taking care of ones' hands and ears!

I had perforation in my teen years, I didn't know about it, but an army doctor mentioned they saw scarring on my ear drum during a medical.

I'm not sure how it has affected my hearing

It's also common to have scars if you had 'tubes' in the ears as a kid. Not sure the Swedish translation is correct but that's a common procedure for small kids (not referring to 6L6s or anything like that 😅 )

Sorry to hear this Kris, hope surgery gets you back in form. Have you ever tried the spiral cleaners? I have seen so much online and on TV about them but am unsure if they work well or not.

Attached Image

I think they may be called Tvidler. Something to look into, worth a shot maybe. Tinnitus is pretty crappy. I had strokes 7 years ago and have a dissected carotid artery which ended up giving me pulsatile tinnitus. I can hear my heartbeat in my right ear. For the first 2 or 3 years, it almost drove me insane, but now I have learned to live with it. The harder part was the weakness in my left arm and hand. It really affected my stamina when playing.

not to take anything away from Kris' situation, is this the old guys thread , the doctor wants to do surgery on my shoulder , nine months without an income , trying to figure out the math on that one

I didn't mean to step on the thread. Sorry if I did. I'm 47. don't feel that old. The tinnitus seemed relevant.
