Controlling your guitar is an art in itself "Actually controlling the instrument, using proper vibrato, bending notes in tune, not fretting too hard, controlling the noise is a skill in itself that takes many years. Yeah that's the one, if Mr Petrucci says "it takes years" then who am I to ever moan again about my progress?
