Hello,

I'm a beginning solo guitar player and I'm facing a problem which I think more people have encountered. With the band I'm in we're playing U2's song One. The song begins slowly and at the end we're building to a climax. I'd like to play a solo at that point, but when I stop playing the chords there's a 'hole' in the music. I was wondering if there are any people who can give me some tips on how to fill the gap. I assume there are more people who have this problem so if anyone can help me I'd be really glad. Maybe a link to a video lesson can help me as well.

Kind regards,
Niels

If there is only one guitarist usually the bassist fills in all the holes and keeps the groove going..

Hi Niels.

I guess you don't have keyboard or another guitar player in your band.
U2's Edge has pretty unique approach to the playing and specially to solos.
He uses a lot of delay and fast rhythm patterns in most of his playing
just to cover those gaps and make more sound.
So if you play U2 song it's most likely that whole sound will "drop" a bit
once you start playing regular guitar solo, single notes.
You could try something just like Edge does, apply more rhythmic
into your solo, maybe even more delay for "sequencer type" effect.
And one more thing, rhythm section (bass and drums) might also try to support
you more when you do soloing, they can use different groove with more punch
compared to rest of the song.

Those are some ideas I can think of atm smile.gif

As said above just ask your bassist to fill the holes. wink.gif

In absence of second guitar in a band , solo spots are usually filled by the bass player and if its available keyboards...Bass player should play "fuller and more complex" groove that feels a lot of space..Also drummer can make its line stronger...

All right, thank you all for the fast replies. I will try to add some more delay to the guitar then and will look at the Edge lesson. Tomorrow we have a repetition again and then I'll conceil it with the other bandmembers. We do have a keyboard player, so he'll have to help as well then. I will also try to use double notes in the solo.

Thanks again! More tips are of course always welcome.

I addition to the advices from everybody, try making more noise by playing several notes at a time during a solo, using different intervals or possibly bass notes to support to melody. Bass and drummer have an important role here as well, their sound should be fuller if possible, and this needs to be rehearsed.

Listen to the drums - if you focus on drums even without Bass , Guitar and Keyboards you will know your way around because drums are center of everything else in music!

I agree with everything that's been said here. In addition, I've sometimes found that the natural drop in dynamics can work to a solo's advantage because it makes it the focal point in the music and you don't need to boost anything - everything stands out naturally. Of course though the solo should be tailored to fill the drop nicely and lead in and out well..
