keep the speaker load and the amp rating the same, its very important and NEVER unplug the speaker cabinet from the amp with the amp on.
Here's how it works: If the load is lower than what the amp is set for, like using a 4 ohm cabinet with the amp set at 16 ohms, the power tubes will be worked harder and will run hotter. This, of course, will shorten the life of the power tubes. However, if the load is higher than the amp's setting, like using a 16 ohm cabinet with the amp set at 4 ohms, the voltages in the output transformer will be higher than normal. These excessively higher voltages increase the risk of arcing, which can destroy the output transformer and/or tube sockets. That's why running an amp with no load at all invariably ends up blowing the output transformer.

This is a very good warning thread...I think a lot of people didn't know that they could kill their amp that way... wink.gif

Ok, so that's why I should never unplug the cable on the back of my combo while it's on! Or turn it on with it unplugged fot that matter...

Good to know smile.gif

Sorry if I don't understand this entirely, but I always thought that the resistance goes virtually to infinity if there is no load, and I also thought that the main reason for getting your electronics damaged that way was the spikes in current or voltage, created by the quick changing in the current (from some current to zero if plugged out quickly). unsure.gif
So why (and where) does the resistance (ohms) go down so much when you disconnect? Can you clarify that, USAMAN, please?

I replaced the original post with one that just say it like it is. Its all about Impedance (Kinda like resistance only for alternating current). For explinations sake resistance is a better way to keep it simple.

The reason why it damages is because pulling the cable out gives a spike and this is what damages the amp. Although most amps have a surge protection of sorts. It's just like if you turn an amp off with the volume right up and you hear a pop sound. This isn't good to do either. And also NEVER touch digital circuitry straight after it has been on because you don't want a capacitor discharging through you.

Talking about damaging amps, and after readin O.C.s last post (thanks for the tip, didn't know that!), I wonder what other things should/shouldn't be done with an amp, such us:

- Turning it on with volume high
- Unplugging/plugging the guitar/effects with the amp on
- What's the purpose of the standby swith of tube amps?
- And what about tube amps that do not have standby?

And so on, I never thought that turning off the amp when it's volume is high could be bad, so I'm suspecting there may be many others thing I should know before I end up destroying all my gear!! blink.gif

The Standby switch is for when you're not using it and you should have it on when you turn amp on as it allows the tubes to warm up. If you play before they are walmed up then you risk damaging them. Keep it on standby at gigs until you go on stage so the tubes are nice and warm when you play smile.gif
