Hey guys! especially kris!

I would'nt wonder if this has already been asked but i didnt find any answer... so ill ask:

am i allowed to use songs, riffs and so on in my band? I love to play stuff i learn here with my band a lot. Most of the time, i change a few things but i often just play what i learned. we haven't had a gig and dind't do any recording yet, but i wonder if i could get problems performing parts of gmc lessons. at this point, i have to mention that i still know the main target of gmc: help guitar players bringing their OWN work. the problem is, that the border between playing just similar chord progressions with variation and playing exactly stuff from gmc can be very thin.

i hope you understand my problem and i'm sure you can help me. if this question had been anwered before, please be so kind and leave me the link therefore^^

greetz, peter

To be completely sure you must ask the instructor who composed the song.

I can't possibly think anyone should have anything against it, though! biggrin.gif (As long as you give them credit)

I think that the idea of the lessons is that you learn the song/solo/riff and then use it to create your own piece in the same style, not copying it note for note.

Although, if you are desparate to play a certain riff from a lesson at a gig I would advise contacting the instructor first and seeing how they feel about it.

If anyone liked something in one of my lessons enough to use in their own songs.. then i would just be honored

Offcourse, i would prefer it to sound more like it was inspired by one of my tracks, and not just a direct copy.

thank you very much! i also think that it would be also more friendly to create inspired song. it would be a bit mean like a parasite to. that would be the way i would feel while directly copying things of our instructors. so i always try to assimilate it to my own style.

I think every musician is inspired by all kinds of things, the trick is to take our inspiration and turn them into something new, something unique, be inspired, but try to avoid pure copying.

Try to work on playing stuff in style of what you learned , to change it to be similar but not exactly same..It can be a good practice..But best way is to just forget what you learned and try to come up with something new smile.gif

Its a matter of degree really -

If you played Muris' Neoclassical (you know the really insane one!) note for note, then yes, that would require permission from Muris and shouldn't be passed off as your own work. But, if you took your favourite run from the middle, added it to a couple of Marcus' licks from Winding roads, then tied them together with a cool sweep you taught yourself from a tab on UG then bingo, its your own piece (influenced by Marcus & Muris to be sure) but its something new and it belongs to you smile.gif

It is normal to have influence from GMC if you learn here. So do whatever it feels and sounds good to you. It is not of course good to copy everything, not mainly because of legal issues, but you will get nowhere. It's the creativity that counts in music.
