Theory is just a way to explain what is it that you're playing

Don't look at it as a "book of rules"

This is something I have said a lot in the past - Theory is a great way of understanding what you play, and suggesting new routes to explore, but it is not something to bind you, exploration is still important!

Well Said Muris, theory language is primarily there for standardized communication between musicians and to know what they are talking about when talking about music. It should not be considered de facto standard because musician then could not be able to go beyond its limits.

I absolutely agree with Muris. In music there are no rules, try whatever comes to your mind, no matter if any theory tells you that this is forbidden, always try to push your boundaries. If everybody would just obey those rules great bands like for example System of a Down would not exist, those guys don't follow any rule, sometimes their songs are so chaotic and weird, still I love them wink.gif

Great tip from Muris.
Theory is definately something about the way you talk about music with other musicians.

Great tip from Muris.
Theory is definately something about the way you talk about music with other musicians.

You are right Jerry, is just like a dictionary, you need to learn words to talk with other people. Then, when you learn a lot of words you can write "hermetic poems" that no one will understand...like Holdsworth... laugh.gif

I would also say that if you come up with something that sounds amazing but breaks the rules ... just add a new rule to the book! This is what current theory is - a list of rules that people thought led to good sounds, and it can always be added to.

Great tip Muris ! Theory is great to know and will help you a lot but we should not get locked inside it while creating etc.. wink.gif Breaking the "low" is a cool way to find new boundaries smile.gif

Excellent tip - this is one of the reason I think that starting with theory isn't always the best way of learning guitar.

It's a bit like attending University before you have experienced life huh.gif If you learn a bunch of songs, solos or riffs first - theory will make alot more sense. In the long run theory will open up to completely new possibilities you would never have thought of.

Also - people who never learn theory often end up doing the same thing over and over without realising it... Of course if what you're doing sounds good then it is good - but many people are looking to get out of "the rut". If they realised theory would make them less repetitive, they would probably dive into it straight away!

Most people that attend University do it before experiencing life - it's a huge problem in society! (and if it wheren't for that we would probably have 10x more rockstars)

Jee I think I got political there!! unsure.gif ohmy.gif
