Hey guys,

I just saw this weird thing.. now matter what kind of chinese name you type in the search.. You'll always get a hit on someone with that name! There are just so many of them on the internet...

NO OFFENCE to Asian people!

I know this topic it's useless...therefore I posted it under the Misc. section tongue.gif

Well, their names, cities, rivers, mountains, everything, corresponds to actual Chinese words, not just stuff made up. For example, Washington is not an English word, it is just a name. My name, Ben, is not a word, well been is, but not Ben. Ivan is not a word, Canis is not a word, etc, etc, etc.

However like I said everything they have corresponds to words because their writing system is based on pictures, not an alphabet, so new characters can't be made up, there is only a set amount, that can't change. I will give some examples.

Mao Zedong- Eastern Swamp Hair, roughly
Beijing- North Capital
Xi'an- Western Peace
Nanjing- South Capital
Chengdu- Completed City
Sichuan- Four Rivers
Zhongguo (China)- Middle Country
Meiguo (America)- Beautiful Country
Riben (Japan)- Sun Land (Land of the Rising Sun)
Tiananmen- Heaven Peace Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace)

Seems kinda stupid at first lol, I know.

Stirred Noodles, literally.

Any other translations you guys need of Chinese, just ask. biggrin.gif. Oh and I think Tokyo means "Capital" in Japanese, so Japanese is the same.

Hell, Spanish is the same to a degree..

Buenos Aires- Good Air
Rio Grande- Big River
La Paz- The Peace
Las Vegas- The Fertile Valleys
Los Angeles (not Las Angeles for Christ's Sake)- The Angels
Quito (I don't think this one was on purpose)- I remove

Many more...

Yea I study Spanish and Mandarin Chinese on a daily basis with self-learning material, since classes at highschool go way too slow. I want to be a professional translator for business one day because I really love the job, and the money is really great. Learning a language is more or less learning 4-5 parts, most people only learn 1-2 parts and think that makes them fluent. Those parts would be, grammar, vocabulary, syntax (word order), idiomatic speech, and writing system (if the target language is in a different one of course, an English-speaking person learning Spanish wouldn't have that problem).

Whatever lol, I don't know jack about Latin, even though I should have recognized "canis" as the scientific (latin) name for wolf/dog genus...

I picked up a Russian book at the bookstore and read it for a minute, the alphabet and "hard" and "soft" vowels and what not, just seemed way to ridiculous.

Maybe you can help me lol. Let's say I want to say "There are still things for us to do," well in a song I like he says that in Spanish as "Aun nos quedan cosas por hacer," ok, first of all, is that complexity normal, and would that make sense to be used in daily speech, or only in like some epic book? And why does he say "por hacer" and not "para hacer." And can I just say "Aun hay cosas para hacer," instead of "Still for us remain the things by doing?"
