Hey there,

I recently noticed, that I don't keep relaxed for a long time when playing guitar. Especially my underarm tends to tense up quite fast.
Do you have any advices for me how I can keep my hand/arm relaxed ?
Best example for being relaxed probably is Marcus, Yngwie or Rick Graham.

Cheers

/edit: The problem only is with my picking hand

If you do some effort to relax, you cannot be relaxed smile.gif

So the best would be to relax your picking hand, try some wrist circling and stretching prior to playing. And maybe it could be due to wrong posture.. if possible put a mirror in front of you and observe how you sit while playing and what body parts are tense and what are not smile.gif

Hmm! That's kind of a tough one chast.

I will share something with you that really helped me. What I was sitting on when I practiced. That may sound strange but just think about it for a minute. If I was sitting in my computer chair, my bed or what ever I just didn't feal real comfortable. I noticed that I tended to want to hold on to the guitar to much with my right arm and hand (my picking hand) I guess because the guitar position wasn't right. It felt like it was going to slide or move. I also seemed to hunch over it some which is bad posture.

I found a drummers stole which is adjustable. Set it to a height that was comfortable and I also use a small foot stole under my right foot. The guitar is just there resting perfect. I don't have to worry about it moving. That relaxed my arm and picking hand. Plus I sit up straight. Now I can play faster and for longer periods of time.

Just a thought man. Hope you can get it worked out.

"Think of a guitar solo as a paragraph. You need a clear beginning, a middle, and an end. Look at musical phrases like sentences, and make sure you break them up using punctuation—or space. You pause naturally when conversing, right? If you don't, you'll bore the listener. The same thing will happen with your audience if your solo is one dimensional. You'll wear them out and lose their attention." —Tom Principato

Do you feel relaxed when just jamming around(playing simple stuff) and not practicing?
Cause if you do then you just need more skills
and you'll be more relaxed even when playing/practicing harder stuff.
Remember,no one is 100% relaxed when playing cause muscles are in use,a lot. wink.gif

Usually when you play something that you are not comfortable with, your hand starts to tense up. Also after a long session, everybody's hands will be tired. Muscles just get tired.
The most effective way to stay relaxed as possible is to - practice relaxed. This way your brain will actually remember to play everything you practiced relaxed, so later when you do play, your hands will not be stiffen. This helps a lot, and building relaxed technique is something that takes a while, so be sure to practice everything nice and slowly, and let your arms create a flow while playing.

You got some great advices up there...I would add my experience, I tend to pick/hit harder with my right hand when I'm on a gig or practice session in the studio..Adrenaline takes its tool and I'm all wired up so I hit harder..Once you catch yourself being less relaxed try relaxing your picking hand by lowering strength you are putting into picking etc and you will definitly see a big change..Once I catch myself picking too hard on gigs etc I just do that and I can really feel the difference...Otherwise I would get tired much faster and that will show on my performance.. smile.gif In the end its all in your mind to control it (of course as you develop your playing skills you will be more relaxed when playing).

I can only add my personal experience too, since everything seems to be said about this topic..

My arm sometimes gets really tired because I'm kinda strangling the pick due to shreding or string skipping. Be sure to hold the pick steadily but dont apply to much force.

If your arm is in an unnatural position (unnatural compared to your regular positure) then it can get tired really quick no matter what you are playing. Maybe it's too much above the guitar and you need to concentrate (subconsciously) more on the playing, or how to hold the guitar (slips from your lap, etc.)

my advice would be to start to do streches and criclings as soon as you feel your arm gets tensed, and to try to find the adquate positon you are sitting in and a relaxed position for you hands too

hope this helps wink.gif

One thing to look at is where the weight of both arms goes resting, this weight disposition should change durng playing cause you dont stay quiet.
