Hey GMC! So lately, i've been listening to a lot of Meshuggah and trying play some their stuff. I know they use 8 strings on some of the newer albums, but 6 strings on earlier ones. Although i've been attempting to cover some over the earlier songs that were done with 6 stings, i'm still lacking the dark, chuggy tone. Any recommendations, special drop tunings, or amp settings that could help?

Heavy strings and low tunings. Meshuggah has always had a super beefy guitar. I can't remember exactly what tunings they use on there earlier albums, But on newer ones its F# Standard (for an 8). I'd say, If you got nice heavy gauge strings .12-52 or even 13 should do, and tune down, down, down. B standard might get you what you want, but Id go for A standard, and since they dont use the high strings too often, you could even tune your 6 to the first 6 of there 8 strings if you wanted.

So far as amp settings and other effects, any idea what they use? And Frederick's technique during his solos seems to be pretty unique. I'm not quite sure what exactly he's doing during songs like "Dancers to a Discordant System" for the opening and such. That's another one of the areas i'm having trouble with. Thanks for the advice! biggrin.gif

Solo wise I couldnt even begin to tell you what they do laugh.gif

Back in a guitar world issue somewhere, Marten had his gear setup in there and he actually uses a Line 6 POD unit live, straight into the P.A. and has an expression pedal or something to that effect which controls some exterior effects like delay and such. Settings wise, if you have a POD you could probably google it and find some presets.

Try ReValver MKIII for some heavy sounds, the models have big amounts of gain with a tight low end, great for chuggin.

Meshuggah actually play only Line 6 Stuff live so any Line 6 gear on the *Insane* setting should get you there tonewise...
The play with a half step down tuning, so on a 6 string on the earlier albums it was just e flat!

Nowadays they have Ibanez Baritone 8 String guitars with a scale length of 30'' (!!!) and they use 9-46 strings; a 52 for the 7th string and a 70 (!!!!) for the lowest 8th string. Normal 8 String tuning would be F# to e; half a step down means Low F to eb. The low F is really ridiculousy low as the guitar is tuned like first fret of a Bass-guitar!!!! The guitar pickups can't really pick the notes up anymore, the guys of Meshuggah don't palm mute the 8th string because it would just be noise and no real sound at all.

I would reccomend to tune your guitar to b flat standard; that tuning is like a 7 String tuning without the high e - that gives you plenty of low end and you can play most of the newer Meshuggah tunes. You will need at leas 12-58 size strings for that tuning:

Thanks guys! I'll try a few sets of heavier strings out. Maybe consider investing in a new amp. biggrin.gif

You will definitely need very thick strings for those low tunings.

Frederick's technique during his solo is influenced by Allan Holdsworth style, but with different attitude.

This is a great thread! Ive been learning Catch 33 this week, using an ibanez 7 tuned to standard which is working okay (same low end as an 8 just missing the high). I was using my krank but as soon as I heard mention of Line 6 i busted out my old 30watt and low and behold.. i sound more like meshuggah now smile.gif thanks guys!
