So upon the advice of GMC members, I saved up some more money and bought myself a Gibson LP Studio:

Now unfortunately I hit the headstock the wrong way and chipped the darn thing! GAH!

I've never done this before but I am pretty sure it has gone right down to the wood. What should I do about this?

Here's a picture:

By the way, the guitar plays and feels exactly how I imagined... it's AWESOME!

Cry out curse words as loud as you can and then just live with it...
Fixing it isn't worth the hassle (and no luthier will get it 100% looking as before). Keep the dent as a reminder to watch for edges^^

Great guitar by the way!

Yup, check that off the list of things to do to a new guitar. Great looking axe, btw! You don't see the chip when you're playing, and nobody else does either. I have a couple of guitars that I can't seem to sit in an open field with, without banging the headstock into something. It's the soul of some guitars. I had to laugh, my son put his mini-Stratocaster on, and immediately put a ding in the headstock. I said, "There, you got that out of the way!" So, thinking he did something good, he hit it against the piano. *shrug* The soul of the guitar, and the player!

Cheers!

Hehehe that is a chip for good luck. I wouldn't do anything if it doesn't spread or something. We always chip our new guitars, I like that regular wear and tear smile.gif

Now Imagine the face of the rythm guitarist when he spend his live savings on a Gibson Les Paul custom (3 times as expensive as yours) and knocked a hugh dent into the front body^^

I wasn't sure if the chip would cause more problems by cracking or not so thank you to everyone for your replies and your humour, I definitely feel better about it after reading this!

Nothing. Things like that are hard to avoid over time, think of it as a beauty mark, one of those cosmetic imperfections that make it one of a kind. You will feel better later. I have a nick on one of my les pauls. An old alarm clock fell off a shelf and nicked it. It bothered me a bit at first, not anymore.

Look at it this way. All things must pass. Hell, in 3 billion years the Milky Way will collide with the Andromeda Galaxy, and no guitar is going to survive that no matter how good care is taken of it.

I am careful with my guitars, but no matter how careful you are, the material world is moving towards higher and higher entropy (disorder). Just the nature of existence.

My philosophical way of saying "screw the nick and carry on".

Great axe. Just forget about the chip, it won't damage the guitar or get worse, just a scar. These things happen, and for some reason usually happen on the first day hehe. No biggie smile.gif

It's small and by the jack input, so it doesn't bother me smile.gif

Very sorry to hear about the chipping of your new baby. sad.gif Sad news to be sure, but as many have said, it's really a battle scar. Guitars that get used to actually make music, get beat up over time. My stage guitars have been through considerable abuse and still play great.

The thing to remember, is that it's a guitar, not a museum piece. Try to take care of it as best you can, but don't kick yourself too badly when it gets nicked. It happens. Unless you keep it under glass. At which point, it's not a guitar, it's art.

Todd

Congratulations and commiserations at the same time!!!

Looks like you've just chipped the Laquer. If it really does bug you then try infilling the chip with Clear Nail Varnish and then polish it up once it's dried. biggrin.gif
Personally I like 'Battle Scarred Guitars'!! They all have a story to tell!!

Thanks to everyone for your replies and especially for your kind words about her looks, even with her battle wounds wink.gif

Initially I wanted the black and gold Studio, but the closest in-stock I could find was the red wine and gold.

I will admit that the more I have it and see it with the red, I am happier with it. When I stand it beside my Ibanez, there is zero contest... the Studio is an absolutely beautiful guitar!

I also thought that when I am on stage, lighting will look infinitely better off of the red versus black!
