Hey Everyone

Just wanted to open a thread where you can ask any theory question that's on your mind these days, whether it's related to a theory lesson on the site or not.

Are you having trouble figuring out the right scale to solo with over a chord or chord progression?

Need to know if you're thinking about a chord or arpeggio spelling correctly?

Just not sure about any element of music theory and want a quick answer?

Post your questions below and I'll get right on answering them for ya!

Also, if you have a suggestion for a future music theory lesson here on the forum, post it below as well and I can make sure to cover that topic in an upcoming article on the site.

Hey Matt...Can the phone apps that you developed for learning jazz chords and scales on your site be used on a normal PC or is there a PC version or other solution? biggrin.gif

Hey, those apps work on ipad, iphone and MAC Desktop as well as Android phones and tablets. but not for PC yet. We are looking into it, but the problem with PC is that the Apps can be pirated very easily, so we are looking into ways that we can offer it on PC but not have it pirated as soon as we release it.

I'm always a bit confused while naming the experimental chord shapes like the last time. I have the theory basics but somtimes argue with my pianist friend about the chord names. Please Matt can You tell me is it possible/correct to name the chord that way - E-minor add5b/9/aug8 ..when we play in the key of E-minor and use such a shape:

|---------------------------0--|
|---------------------------8--|
|--------------------------10--|
|---------------------------8--|
x------------------------------|
E------------------------------|

Hey

I look at that chord as Edimb9 as the notes are E G Bb F, so like an Edim triad with an F on top. If it's in the key of E minor, then it could be functioning as a idim chord, tonic diminished, or it could be borrowing from E Locrian for that chord as all those notes fit into the E Locrian chord/scale, so a bit of modal borrowing.

chords like this are tricky out of context. It's actually easier to name them if they are in a progression so you can see what came before and where it went after. Do you have a progression that you use this in? That might make it easier to give it an exact name.

You can take a look at my 90's metal chops lesson. It's somewhere in the middle. I had some issues with naming that chord but seems like the Edimb9 could work fine smile.gif Thank You smile.gif

Cool will check it out. Yeah that's a tough chord, it's Locrian something or other! smile.gif But if I was soloing over it or writing a melody over that chord I would use Locrian to build that line. Seems like it would fit the best.

There's a fairly long history of naming chords like that 'modally' i.e., Locrian chord.
I feel it's descriptive of it's overall 'tonality'.

Yeah I think of certain chords that way for sure, like

x3x451 as a C Ionian chord since it has a maj3, p4 and maj7 in it.

I mean 'I guess' you could call Darius' chord a Gm13 but that doesn't really give any clue to it's color or timbral quality - let alone it's function.

That's funny, I call that the 'Gamelan' chord. Derived from: 1 3 4 5 7 (5 4 3 1)
It can function as a 'bitey' V7.

Yeah, that's a cool sound. I use it on modal tunes based around Ionian to really make it sound different from a Lydian sound.
