Eeeek, you do know I will now neglect everything else to get this done
Edit: 21:00 OK I now have bars 29 & 30 in my fingers, very slow and very scruffy, the guitar nearly went through the window a few times as both bars use the same notes in different patterns and my fingers/brain kept on mixing parts of bar 29 with parts of bar 30 Tomorrow I know I will get it wrong but each day more will be remembered. hahaha well, please be organized to cover everything, but what is more important, enjoy and connect with each task. And if the book's reading takes some time from practice, don't worry, it's time well invested.

Thanks Gab,
The book won't take practise away. I always read when I go to bed, it helps me to sleep. I've just finished Duff McKagan's autobiography so the timing is good . -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. I've read Slash's and it was amazing, what about Duff's book? Is it good? What's the name?

I enjoyed it. It's called "It's So Easy (And Other Lies)" maybe not quite as entertaining as Slash's but still a very good read. Slash, Duff and Izzy seem really nice blokes regardless of the fact they were hard core junkies living in squalor in the early days. Reading Duff's book makes you realise how much they wanted to play their own music at any cost, they deserve their position in rock and roll's hall of fame, nothing was going to stop them.

Buy Duff's book, you will enjoy it.
Ok, tonight I have nearly thrown my guitar out of the window many times I have played bars 29 and 30 a couple of times in the correct note sequence but not consistent. I am now worrying that my three days away will put me back again. After this break I need to get a travel guitar, maybe a Steinburger headless guitar, I lose too much when I have a break. What is annoying me is that it isn't the technique that I am struggling with the most but the memory of the note sequence. I will record something for you on our agreed date but at this rate it won't have any backing track because I can't play all parts equally. Sorry Gab but this is one of the hardest things I have ever struggled with. I WILL DO IT eventually. I feel like this guy at 2:55 onwards Update : That book is brilliant. It's like reading about myself. Haven't got top the meditation yet but I usually fall asleep when listening to meditation cds Cheers Gab This post has been edited by Phil66: Aug 28 2015, 08:09 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil, thanks for the recommendation, and great to know that you are enjoying the book.
About the recording, it would be important to hear you playing over a backing track. It can be a slower one but please use something that marks rhythm. It can also be a metronome. -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
I will try, I think it is amazing how you guys can play these tracks at any speed. I mean, I can play something like a 12 bar blues over any speed but that's just repetitive stuff played on the beat. When Darius plays this piece slowly and is coming it at unusual points within the bar I find it an immense skill, almost robot like. I'll do my best Gab. I've edited the post above as the YouTube video wasn't showing. That is really how I feel some nights Did you have a quick look at the other book I am thinking of getting? How did you get on listening to the Ruts? Cheers buddy, don't forget, I'm not at home for 3 days but will have access to the forum. -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil,
Are you that angry?? Do you mean the book about practice? I don't know it but it looked cool. It's good to check some reviews before getting it. Some other books that are about music and practice which I like are: Free Play, Zen Guitar and The Music Lesson by Wooten. Also, David Lynch's Catching the Big Fish is an inspiring book. The Ruts sound really cool, I can relate them a lot with The Clash. -------------------- My lessons

Hello Gab,
I am really really really sorry. I've tried and tried and tried. I just won't be able to get a recording of the Darius solo to you tomorrow, I'm sorry from the bottom of my heart. As this week has gone on I have actually got worse at that solo. Even the first 75% that was ok before is bad now. I've tried to record over a slower backing and my timing is all over the place. If you could hear me now you would think I had been on it for only ONE week. This piece is driving me insane, seriously insane. I will not quit but I can see me practising this for years and not improving. I don't know what it is about it, I love the piece but it just doesn't happen. I WILL NOT GIVE UP but I cannot send you a piece of crap. Sorry, I really didn't want to let you down with this and honestly I have put more time into this than anything else. Some nights I have given it two hours non stop. This piece nearly made me stop playing guitar altogether at one point, I was thinking I have found my limit so what's the point if my limit is to be the eternal beginner? I'm over that now, but at this very moment I have tears in my eyes typing this, tears of frustration, this tune is in my head all day long, I wake up in the night humming it, I wake up every morning humming it, it has taken over my soul. I really don't know how to improve beyond what I am doing. I even considered hypnosis but couldn't find anyone local. I managed to play along with GP5 at 70% a couple of times but I was relying on the track to help me along with the timing. If I could record the GP5 track with the metronome I would at least give you that but I don't know how to do that. Tonight I was very nearly like that video above. To top it all, my PC speakers failed yesterday so I had to go into the city this evening to get some replacements. I don't have much space so I went for THESE and now my sound is totally different so my Darius patch needs adjusting. These will be more accurate than the last cheap PC gaming speakers I had though. I also mail ordered some Mopads as the guitar shop didn't have any. Sorry to let you down, I hate letting people down especially when they, like you, are putting time in for me. I also hate being beaten by something. Maybe the frustration is killing my development. I think Kenny Werner said something about trying too hard but that's me, I try and try and try either do it or die!!! I now have a banging headache. Need to chill. Sorry Gab. EDIT: I've found out how to export GP5 as a WAV and put it into Reaper. More useful, I've been messing and have found out that if you change the BPM in the DAW the actual tracks play at that speed too. I didn't think this would happen, I thought that it was just for the initial setup for your BPM. I will now try to send you something tomorrow. I will have to use the track from Darius's lesson video that I converted to mp3 just for a bit of help with the timing at the moment as I totally suck. But at least I've found a way to get something to you This post has been edited by Phil66: Sep 3 2015, 09:45 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Hi Phil, please relax! Have you reached the part where Werner does an experiment to show that music is not that important? The first thing that you need to do is to relax and enjoy, and honestly finish that book.
For any reason this is not the right time for this lesson so it would be great to let it for later and work on some other stuff. Lessons are excuses to develop our playing and slowly find our own voice on guitar. So switching between lessons shouldn't be dramatic. The task is the following: - Record yourself playing the lesson, no matter if it's bad, just record it to let me hear where you are at this moment, and then I'll suggest some other work. Ok? Is this a deal? -------------------- My lessons

Thanks Gab,
I'll do it tonight. Sorry for not coming up to standard. I haven't got to the experiment yet but he has mentioned it. I'm about 40% through. I read before I go to sleep, depending on how tired I am I sometimes only manage a few pages before my book falls on my face I will probably read it twice. Cheers Phil Update: Here is the take, it goes wrong in places but that is how it is now, worse than ever. As I was getting closer to bars 29 and 30 I felt the tension building, I didn't play them; they wouldn't have happened https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/darius-solo-messy Here are those two problematic bars played with no backing just so you can hear that I kind of have them under my fingers but not up to speed. https://soundcloud.com/gmcphil-1/29-30a Thank you so much for your patience Gab, it must be hard being a mentor to someone like me Update II: I woke up this morning remembering that I had got to the experiment about music being unimportant, I didn't use the plastic bag but I understood what he was saying I think. The thing is to me it is the most important unimportant thing in my life so I want it too much which makes it stressful to look earn This post has been edited by Phil66: Sep 5 2015, 08:13 AM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Stiff Little Fingers are a punk rock band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. They formed in 1977, at the height of the troubles. They consisted of two catholic and two protestant members. In the first song they basically tell the IRA (Catholic) and the UVF (Protestant) what they think. This was a very brave thing to to at the time. Both the IRA and the UVF were/are terrorist organisations. I've put a short documentary about the troubles at the beginning just to help you understand the reasons for their songs. They were brought up in this environment.
I could be a soldier Go out there and fight to save this land Be a people's soldier Paramilitary gun in hand I won't be a soldier I won't take no orders from no-one Stuff their fucking armies Killing isn't my idea of fun They wanna waste my life They wanna waste my time They wanna waste my life And they've stolen it away I could be a hero Live and die for their 'Important' cause A united nation Or an independent state with laws And rules and regulations That merely cause disturbances and wars That is what I've got now All thanks to the freedom-seeking hordes They wanna waste my life They wanna waste my time They wanna waste my life And they've stolen it away I'm not gonna be taken in They said if I don't join I just can't win I've heard that story many times before And every time I threw it out the door Still they come up to me With a different name but same old face I can see the connection With another time and a different place They ain't blonde-haired or blue-eyed But they think that they're the master race They're nothing but blind fascists Brought up to hate and given lives to waste They wanna waste my life They wanna waste my time They wanna waste my life And they've stolen it away All things are relative with cousins everywhere Hard-nosed, blue-eyed boys, intelligent and fair You gotta pitch in for your kith and kin Holding the line to save our skin Pound for pound, we'll take the shilling It takes a man to make a killing Action men must sterling be Fight for freedom but not for free Bark and bite, might is right We're the dogs of war Bark and bite, might is right If the price is right, dogs of straw So let's go far to the new frontier It's in the blood defending near and dear Action men must sterling be Fight for freedom but not for free Bark and bite, might is right We're the dogs of war Bark and bite, might is right If the price is right, dogs of straw A man must do what he must do To prove what life is all about Admit you must admire our guts If only 'cause they're hanging out Bark and bite, might is right We're the dogs of war Bark and bite, might is right If the price is right, dogs of straw Dogs of straw, bark and bite Dogs of straw, might is right Dogs of straw, stab and hate Dogs of straw, split and rape Dogs of straw, gouge and blind Dogs of straw, crunch and grind Dogs of straw, mash and maim Dogs of straw, cash and fame Dogs of straw, cut and kill Dogs of straw, guts for sale Inflammable material is planted in my head It's a suspect device that's left 2000 dead Their solutions are our problems They put up the wall On each side time and prime us Make sure we get fuck all They play their games of power They try to mark the pack They deal us to the bottom But what do they put back? Don't believe them Don't believe them Don't be bitten twice You gotta sus-sus-suspect device They take away our freedom In the name of liberty Why can't they all just clear off Why can't they let us be They make us feel indebted For saving us from hell And then they put us through it It's time the bastards fell Don't believe them Don't believe them Don't be bitten twice You gotta sus-sus-suspect device Don't believe them Don't believe them I try to question everything you're told Just take a look around you At the bitterness and spite Why can't we take over And try to put it right Please don't believe us Don't believe us Don't be bitten twice You gotta sus-sus-suspect device We're a suspect device if we do what we are told But a suspect device can score an own goal I'm a suspect device the Army can't defuse You're a suspect device they know they can't refuse We're gonna blow up in their face He joined up to get a job And show he wasn't scared Swapped Boy Scout hat for army cap At the age of 17, he was forced to choose Now at the age of 21, he's in Catch 22 He joined up for just three years It seemed a small amount But, they didn't tell him that the first two didn't count At the age of 17, how was he to know? That at the age of 21, he'd still have one to go? Tin soldier He signed away his name Tin soldier No chance for cash or fame Tin soldier Now, he knows the truth Tin soldier He signed away his youth He joined up 'cos dad knew best to do right by his son Now, he hates and counts the dates That mark time on square one At the age of 17, he did as he was told Now at the age of 21, tin still won't turn to gold Tin soldier He signed away his name Tin soldier No chance for cash or fame Tin soldier Now, he knows the truth Tin soldier He signed away his youth If at the age of 17, you fall in line too soon At the age of 21, you'll still march to their tune Tin soldiers You sign away your name No chance for cash or fame You never see the truth You sign away your youth You go and join the queue Do what they want you to They take away your name They treat you all the same Sign away you life I'll let you discover more if you want to.
