Much better Phil!! Please continue practicing the riff to be able to play it always tight. By the way most of the times sounds tight! smile.gif

Keep the great job! I have really positive thoughts about this first week of the new program.

Hello Gab,

I think this way of learning suits me the best. I also hope it gives you a better idea at how quickly or slowly I can learn things given my limited free time. Having the video recording still affected me for the Rock Steady video but after a few bars I relaxed a little bit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6DvBfpzMj0...eature=youtu.be

OK, have I passed assignment 1? Or do I need to improve more?

By June 27 you'll have to share 3 videos:

- A video playing the lesson from the beginners corner at normal tempo. (4 coins) Done
- A second video playing the same lesson without backing track but transposed to E minor. (3 coins) Done
- A video playing the main riff of Rock Steady Song. (3 coins) Done

Cheers buddy.

UPDATE:
I've been thinking, maybe I should have recorded myself against the backing track instead of the studio track for your assessment. Do you agree?

Hi Phil! This is totally AWESOME! smile.gif

Based on your submits these are your results:

TASK 1: 4 + 3 coins

TASK 2: 2 coins

TOTAL: 9/10 coins. The task 2 is not perfect because the riff still has some timing issues. However it's close!

Congratulations assignment 1 is passed!!

I'll be back in a moment with assignment 2.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ASSIGNMENT #2:

Goals:

- Phrasing with the shape learnt from the minor pentatonic
- Learning another section from Rocksteady

TASK 1:

Now you should be able to visualize and play perfectly the first shape of the Pentatonic minor. In this task we will extend that shape a bit more and start applying it over a backing track.

First, learn this shape and notice how it's related to the other shape:

Play it up and down. Try to visualize the chord learnt in the first assignment.

Practice the scale over this backing track and share 1 video with you improvising during 52 seconds over this backing on the final date (deadline): Attached File  A_minor_backing_track___GuitarMasterClass___Laszlo_Boross.mp3 ( 1014.87K ) Number of downloads: 75

TASK 2:

Learn the section starting at 1:00 to 1:20 from Rocksteady.

Exam and deadline:

By July 7th you'll have to share 3 videos:

- A video playing new scale shape up and down over the backing track. (2 coins)
- A second video improvising over the backing track. (4 coins)
- A video playing the new section learnt from Rock Steady Song. (4 coins)

Each of this videos will be evaluated (check the coins value below). You need to get at least 7 coins to pass. If you pass, we can continue, if you don't you will have a second "call" that would be the last one.

Thanks Gab,
I'm on it smile.gif
Phil

UPDATE:
Wow, it's been so long since I played open chords. Just trying to remember, "don't walk the chords" cool.gif

Regarding the new scale shape. Same notes, spread along the neck. I find the first C on the A string a little awkward, I prefer it on the E string but this is what I have to learn so I am learning it cool.gif I can visualize the chord from the previous shape but I don't think you can play it using that shape unless you have spider hands smile.gif

Here is the first video as requested:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLiW1dyx1WI...eature=youtu.be

Regarding the improvisation video. Do I have to wait until the last day to post just 1 video? You said "Practice the scale over this backing track and share 1 video with you improvising during 52 seconds over this backing on the final date (deadline)" Or can I post others for assessment as we go along?

Cheers Gab

The scale shape doesn't include a very tricky stretch so let's use this week also to get used your fingers to it. This shape as well as some others we will work are essential to visualize the fret-board more horizontally which is a great advantage to play more melodic and less obvious ideas.

We can get 2 improvisations here. One in 5 days and another one at the deadline. We don't need lots of takes, we need that you work, practice, record yourself and analyze what you are doing to fix it before I check it.

Thanks Gab,

Fully understood wink.gif

How was the scale playing in the video?

Cheers

Update:
I should have a video of me playing the main rif going into the chorus chords tomorrow. It's sill a bit scruffy but I've got it up to tempo now. The C chord is still a challenge for me but it always was biggrin.gif

I'll have an improvisation recorded for the weekend. Would you like a video for this first one or just sound?

Cheers buddy, this is great, I think I've finally found my way of learning. When can we cover the basic theory of this track?

Thank you so much for your help mate smile.gif

Hi Phil, great stuff!! The scale sounds good on the video! smile.gif

Once you can play the whole song we can get into the theory, ok? (You can remind me this if I don't remember since it's not part of the plan I've designed but now that you say, it's a great extra value)

About videos, it's up to you. The only videos that I'm really expecting are the ones required in the "exam & deadline" section.

Thanks Gab,

I'll plug away until nearer the deadline. I was just thinking of putting a pre exam video up so you could assess and advise what I need to do to pass. Hopefully that will prevent punishment wink.gif

Hello Gab,

I hope you are having a great time.

I have just been worrying BIG time. I had finished my practise and just for fun I had a look at the solo in Rock Steady. I really can't see me managing to get that right within the kind of deadlines you are giving me at the moment. For me, it's a lot harder than it sounds, it's got some funny fingerings, for me anyway. There's a full bend on the 5th fret B string followed immediately by two notes on the 8th fret. That seems tricky to me.

Cheers

Phil

Hello Gab,

As requested:
By July 7th you'll have to share 3 videos:

- A video playing new scale shape up and down over the backing track. (2 coins)
- A second video improvising over the backing track. (4 coins)
- A video playing the new section learnt from Rock Steady Song. (4 coins)

Playing the A minor pentatonic scale over backing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLiW1dyx1WI

Improvising over the backing using the new scale pattern. I don't know if I'm doing right but I like to get a theme in my head and work around it. I see/hear many that just seem to make random widdling, which is fine if that's what they want but I prefer a theme in my head.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mrLDv-g_0Q...eature=youtu.be

Playing Rock Steady chorus. I wasn't sure if you just wanted the chorus or the chorus fitted in with the rhythm. I've been practising to the studio track but wanted the exam to be all my own work! I didn't want the studio guitar guiding me. I fluff the first C chord up when I fit it in with the rhythm at the moment but I can do it fine when I just play the chorus part. Maybe I should have just played the chorus part and not risk losing coins unsure.gif
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSb3e6JjTH8...eature=youtu.be

Hope it's ok Gab. I've had a pretty rough week for practise but done my very best with the time I've had. Didn't get chance to practise at all last night and only had time to record these two videos tonight without a warm up. (I did the first video a few days ago. I look forward to your comments and putting things right that you say are wrong.

Cheers

Hi Phil! I'm so proud of you!! I can notice how this new program is keeping you on track.

Based on your submits these are your results:

TASK 1: 2 + 3 coins

TASK 2: 3 coins

TOTAL: 8/10 coins.

You did a killer job with everything. You have less coins just because the tasks are much more demanding than the previous assignment but the little issues to adjust will be covered in the next assignments. To summarize the reasons why you get 3/4 coins:

- The improvisation is very cool, I can notice how you are creating phrases that make sense and how smoothly you are using the neck more horizontally. You need to use more silences to defined phrases, sometimes longer notes, vibrato and bending.

- It's awesome to see how you could learn the song in just 20 days. The next step is to make the chord changes smoother in the chorus.

Congratulations assignment 2 is passed!!

I'll be back with the assignment 3. (in the mean time you can dedicate some time focused on the issues previously described)

Thanks Gab,

I was worried I might not pass. No rush with the next assignment, I am away all weekend. I hope you are having a great time in NYC.

I really think this is the way for me to learn. learning a song I like, improvising in the key the song is in while learning a new scale shape seems to cover a lot of things at once with only three dedicated tasks. It also gives me chance to have a go at other things like Todds Bootcamp and Saturday Shred Challenge.

Thank you for this new approach Gab, let's hope it doesn't go stale smile.gif

Cheers

Phil
