Todd,

Sorry, I got back too late to submit anything. A lady who was getting onto the plane fell down the steps, they called paramedics to see if they could fix her up but she had to go to hospital in the end so then, they had to find her luggage in the hold all this meant we missed our time slot. Let's hope she's ok.

Cheers

Phil

Nice! You really nailed here IMHO. I can hear that you are using notes/musical phrases from the vocal parts of the song in your solo which is a great idea and honestly has a long tradition in Rock Music. Using the vocal lines as the basis of a solo connects the listener to the solo in a way that they might otherwise not connect. For non musicians/non guitar players, having the vocal melody as part of the solo provides the listener with a way to have emotional context for the bits of the song that don't have words. As musicians, we can often connect to songs with out any words at all. However, folks that are not musicians often need the words to connect with the vocal melody, and referencing it in the solo gets them to connect much more deeply to the solo. This is really the entire point of the solo IMHO, to create an emotional connection with the listener.

Your technique is very solid indeed and your using most of the fretboard which is great to see. It's too easy often to get stuck in a single position/scale. This has the effect of confining the solo, and thus confining it's emotional impact on the listener to some degree. I can see your mission training paying off in spades! Making use of the entire fretboard, solid technique all around, following your instincts and not overly focusing on the notes so much as the flow of the solo. In short, you just..

LEVELED UP!!!!!!

Viva la France!!!!!!

Thanks Todd,

Here's one take, total improv. It's pretty shaky at the start but I think it gets a little bit better as it goes on. Didn't have time to spend on tone I'm afraid. I tried to use more of the neck than I usually do.

As usual, the ideas in my head don't make it to the fretboard rolleyes.gif

If this gets a badge up can you remove on of the 'L's please wink.gif

Rip it apart mate wink.gif

First off Phil, thanks for taking the time to go for a take and having the cahones to share it with the group! It's not easy to put yourself out there like that. Especially at the start when you are not yet sure of your abilities. Mucho Kudos!

On to the debrief!!! I like your atonal style in bits here. (p.s. not a backhanded way of saying your playing out of key) I"m assuming of course, that you chose the notes that you chose on purpose, as opposed to just sort of guessing and hoping for the best Either way, ti worked out smile.gif I did notice it seemed like your fingers were almost fighting to solo in the key of A Blues/ A Pentatonic instead of E Blues/E Pentatonic and in particular E Minor which is one of the better scales to work in given the structure of the backing. It's a much more complex scale though so not alway the first one reached for. Once you get used to it though, it's a wealth of licks in one scale.î

I must congratulate you on your technique here btw! You have good timing, good pick control, no extra string noise, etc. Your overall technique is MUCH improved and you are coming along nicely toward being a MONSTER PLAYER!!!! I'm happy to badge you up here smile.gif

One thing though, please do let me know if you were trying to play against key for itonal impact, or if you were a bit guessing and missed a few here and there? Either way, your technique is solid and your approach is good and you just....

LEVELED UP!!!

Thanks todd,

I was kinda winging it with the notes. I knew I was going out of the park but it was a bit of guess work as to whether or not it would work which, obviously given my level, I don't know how it will sound until I hit it so that's why some do sound a bit too flat to my ears. It was a total imrpov after 15 minutes rehearsal after a week out so I don't think it's too bad considering everything wink.gif Also with E I'm losing my "safe" box shape unless I use the open strings so i picked the two frets with the most "key" notes on and based it around those wink.gif

Cheers buddy.

I hear ya! I was glad to see you take a stab at it smile.gif Getting out of one's comfort zone is only way we grow as players IMHO, I mean really grow. So as uncomfy as it can be, I'd say go for it as often as you can! I make sure to provide the scale tablature for the scales involved, but this would assume you could look at a scale sheet and not your fingers during an improv, or memorize enough of it, to play chunks of it against the backing.

One thing I'd say is try to learn the Blues and Minor Scale, just the root/primary position, so that you can play it with your eyes closed. That way you can focus on the nexus between what you are hearing(the backing) and what is going on in your head that you want to play smile.gif I hope that makes sense!

Wow this was a fun one! smile.gif I tried to reproduce some ideas of the original solo and interpreted them in my own way. I guess I could have used less gain though biggrin.gif

NICE!! This particular solo is a big step forward in your playing IMHO. You really pull a lot of things together on this solo to make something very musical, very listenable, and is as technically impressive as it is emotionally solid.

I"m glad to see that other folks seem to be enjoying it as much as I am smile.gif I must say that the bit at 1:22 where you are doing a bit of a pentatonic pedal point thing is particularly spiff. smile.gif

You have taken all of the bits that we have gone over in our vid chats, a bunch of bits that you got from other places, and put them all together with very fine guitar tone. What are you using for that tone btw? It works very well here. Your playing has a great sense of dynamics to it as well (the diff between loud shouty bits and quiet bits JIC).

In short, you FREAKING KILLED IT!!!! and...

LEVELED UP!!

In a word, FREAKIN A!!!! Ok, that's two words. smile.gif I like how you start with very low gain and kick it in to crazy, showing use of dynamics (loud/soft) is a key bit in "THE JOURNEY"! smile.gif I also dig how you took bits of the actual solo, as you mentioned, and turned it in to your own solo. Nicely done there as well. The high gain bit at the end didn't throw me off, seemed to work just fine for what you were playing. BTW NICE IBBY!!!!!! smile.gif I've said it before, had to say it again. Then again, I'm a bit prejudiced so please don't think I'm disparaging your non ibby guitars. They need love too. Any day now IBBY is gonna realize their mistake and offer me a deal or something!!! smile.gif

Anyhoo! Back to the playing smile.gif Very good use of technique here and I see you are trying to articulate the pick a bit more from the fingers which is a good thing IMHO smile.gif As you play, you will find a sort of common ground between what we talked about and your own style. It looks like you are finding you way there as we speak smile.gif Good note choice, execution, tone, style.

In short you just ..

LEVELED UP!!!!

BTW guys, I hope WYVEREX doesn't mind here, but I really wanted to share some of his Piano playing. Check this out. It's really darn good.
