Quick Licks #26 Quick Tips/Tricks to Great Vibrato Technique INTRO: VIbrato is one of the most important techniques to learn in order to be a truly great player. It's the basis for creating a solo that evokes emotion from the listener. It's very easy to do it wrong, but it's very easy to do fix any bad haits and do it right. Ben shared a vid Ola made a few days after I created this lesson and it encapsulates all of it. Give it a watch. It can change your playing and your life. Make sure to use your entire hand for vibrato, don't use just the finger tip. Focus on up and down motions and try to avoid quick back and forth movements as it results in a very shallow/twitchy vibrato sound. This is the most important Quick Licks we've ever done. This two minute video explains it all. The drills will create good habits an your vibrato will be cured. *The vid contains the secret sauce. The Drills are just execution. John Norum Talks Very Briefly about the Importance of Vibrato. *NOTE: It's ok to let your thumb come over the top. This is fine for blues/funk soloing where you need bigger vibraro. *Try this simple warm up AFTER watching the vid, so that it makes sense. 26warmup.gp5 ( 1.61K ) Number of downloads: 110 *Here is the part to record on Vid Quick Licks 26. 26.gp5 ( 1.71K ) Number of downloads: 109 BACKGROUND / COMMENTS This is based on gabes funk collab. If you have not joined, it's a great chance to work on your soloing! It's not a fast backing, no shredding. Just focus on your bending and vibrato. Here is the link to the collab. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...c=59206&hl= BTW: Let me know if this one or any of them are just to complicated for you guys or just not what you wanna play. I need to figure out why some like this one get no response. This post has been edited by Todd Simpson: May 11 2018, 09:37 PM |

Thanks Todd,
I think many of us beginners are kinda scared to go too wide for some reason. I'm not too bad on longer notes but it's things line in this lesson https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Phil-Collen-Beginner/ where Ben can vibrato the instant he hits the string and the note is very short that I really struggle with. It's as though Ben's finger is performing vibrato before it gets to the string, I seem to need to move on to the next note before I've managed to start my vibrato -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. I actually wrote this one specifically for you and a couple of other folks who I've seen using the the shallow vibrato technique. That technique certainly has it's place, but this drill will teach you how to use the entire hand for full, deep vibrato and give you practice on sticking the landing with a single finger and going straight in to vibrato as you mention. This one technique is something that I see folks stumble on in REC submissions over and over. Hopefully this will fix it
Todd Thanks Todd, I think many of us beginners are kinda scared to go too wide for some reason. You are one of the students I created this lesson for. The main thing I see in your playing that needs work is your vibrato. I see it in REC missions and Collabs. If you can work your way through this lesson, I think you can close the gap and have a good handle on everything you need to move ahead. Todd Hi Todd i'll work on this days !! Cheers Laurent |

Sorry it's late Todd,
I'm working on this now, not easy, I'm no wimp but it's making my left shoulder ache a little This post has been edited by Phil66: May 16 2018, 08:59 PM -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. Here's my first take Todd,
I didn't want to play it fast (probably couldn't anyway ) I wanted to work the vibrato a bit. I didn't worry too much about the timing either, I just played it to my own feel for now. Please advise. https://youtu.be/tZ2QNfC6zaA Cheers Phil -------------------- SEE MY GMC CERTIFICATE “Success is not obtained overnight. BINGO!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!! You nailed the pinky pull, then the bend to pitch, (score/double score) then most of all, NAILED, utterly NAILED the vibrato. Didn't rush it. Let the finger find it's way, kept the thumb ATTACHED to the neck, and let that sweet vibrato ring out. Nyyyaiiiiiiiccccce. Well freaking done, gotta say. I almost expected this to be a first try, that I would sorta give tips on but NOPE. KRUSHED IT. That specific vibrato technique is very crucial when playing licks with "feeling". It let's you put your emotional output right in to the strings. The faster you use vibrato, the more tense and and high energy it feels. Slower, will feel more soulful and a bit melancholy. These emotional impacts have an effect on the listener even if they don't realize it. Which is why this is so crucial to get right. You can use this same technique up higher on the neck. Put this an octave up and give it a whirl. Also, try this lick with a blues backing, ASAP and try to feel it in to place with actual music. That's the last step for any of these. Any blues in G will work, plenty are on youtube for example. **BONUS POINTS: Very stylish shirt and very spiff Ibby!! In short. Killed it! Congrats Todd Here's my first take Todd,
