Quick Licks #26 Quick Tips/Tricks to Great Vibrato Technique

INTRO:
VIbrato is one of the most important techniques to learn in order to be a truly great player. It's the basis for creating a solo that evokes emotion from the listener. It's very easy to do it wrong, but it's very easy to do fix any bad haits and do it right.

Ben shared a vid Ola made a few days after I created this lesson and it encapsulates all of it. Give it a watch. It can change your playing and your life.

Make sure to use your entire hand for vibrato, don't use just the finger tip. Focus on up and down motions and try to avoid quick back and forth movements as it results in a very shallow/twitchy vibrato sound.

This is the most important Quick Licks we've ever done. This two minute video explains it all. The drills will create good habits an your vibrato will be cured.

*The vid contains the secret sauce. The Drills are just execution.

John Norum Talks Very Briefly about the Importance of Vibrato.

*NOTE: It's ok to let your thumb come over the top. This is fine for blues/funk soloing where you need bigger vibraro.

*Try this simple warm up AFTER watching the vid, so that it makes sense.

BACKGROUND / COMMENTS
This is based on gabes funk collab. If you have not joined, it's a great chance to work on your soloing! It's not a fast backing, no shredding. Just focus on your bending and vibrato. Here is the link to the collab.

BTW:
Let me know if this one or any of them are just to complicated for you guys or just not what you wanna play. I need to figure out why some like this one get no response.

Thanks Todd,

I think many of us beginners are kinda scared to go too wide for some reason. I'm not too bad on longer notes but it's things line in this lesson https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Phil-Collen-Beginner/ where Ben can vibrato the instant he hits the string and the note is very short that I really struggle with. It's as though Ben's finger is performing vibrato before it gets to the string, I seem to need to move on to the next note before I've managed to start my vibrato laugh.gif

NAILED IT !!!!!

This is what I'm talking about. Deep, wide, full, rich, sticking the landing Vibrato. I'm very glad that this is such a good example of Vibrato. It's a very fine take on the lick. Didn't play it fast, didn't rush it, focused on the Vibrato and made each one it's own thing.
This is exactly what I was hoping for. This lick doesn't need to be played fast, it sounds just fine played slow. Whether alone or with a backing.

Feel free to play it with the backing in the notes above folks for anyone who follow this one. You can play with or without a backing track. Either way is fine smile.gif

Now then, let's look at the performance here. Not a bit out of place. Each strike is clean, the starting bend is to pitch, the pull off is spot on, and the vibrato is darn near perfect. Using the entire hand to deepen the vibrato and starting it as soon as the finger hits the string. Also a great example of single finger vibrato using the hand as a fulctrum. This is exactly what I was hoping to get across in the lesson and you just KRUSHED IT!!!!! Nice.

You can do this! You just have to play the lick one time, and play it very clean and don't worry about playing it fast, and you'll kill it!

I actually wrote this one specifically for you and a couple of other folks who I've seen using the the shallow vibrato technique. That technique certainly has it's place, but this drill will teach you how to use the entire hand for full, deep vibrato and give you practice on sticking the landing with a single finger and going straight in to vibrato as you mention. This one technique is something that I see folks stumble on in REC submissions over and over. Hopefully this will fix it smile.gif

It's worth doing. You are one of the students I created this lesson for. The main thing I see in your playing that needs work is your vibrato. I see it in REC missions and Collabs. If you can work your way through this lesson, I think you can close the gap and have a good handle on everything you need to move ahead.

Man vibrato is so crucial, but takes soooo long to develop. Here's my take:

Bingo!! That's it! That's exactly what I"m looking for. You did a bit of a cheat not using the pinky on the landing after the bend, but this is poker so there really isn't any cheating smile.gif In the end it just needs to sound good. I'd say try the lick with you pinky to see if you can make it work as you don't have to reach your third finger as far, but it's a small detail. The main point of this is VIBRATO. Hanging the thumb over the top (blues style) and using the entire hand to wag that note up and down so hard that you end up moving the guitar neck up and down with it. No lateral movement, no letting go of the neck, not finger tip only, full handed, BIG, DEEP, LUSH Vibrato. Nice.

And to quote the 20th Century Philosopher John Norum.

Good news!! Your vibrato is so deep one could get lost and not find their way out!! Score.

And you just ...

This is a GREAT vid imho about Vibrato. He talks about many of the same things I just talked in my lesson comments just this past Saturday, E.G. using the whole hand, letting the neck wiggle up and down ext. Great Vid Ola!!!! Many thanks for sharing ben. He also brings up the same thing as John Norum in the vid I shared in the lesson, if you hear someone shredding it up, and then their vibrato is lame, it just kills the entire listening experience. It's crucial to have good vibrato. So even though it may be intimidating, please give this lesson a go so that I can help you through your vibrato issues.

VERY close indeed. I see your thumb losing contact with the back of the neck and wagging free. For this Lick, I need you to GRIP the neck with your thumb and use the thumb as part of the fulcrum created by your hand that creates the vibrato. Start with the finger tip, then go all the way around to the thumb. keep the thumb attached to the neck at all times for the purpose of this lick. I'm trying to get rid of the habit of letting go of the neck with your thumb when it could be helping to deepen your vibrato.

There may be some times with you want to use just one finger and let the thumb go. This is not one of those times. The entire lick is about using the thumb as leverage to get a deeper Vibrato. Make sense?

It's good that you mention that! Try to focus your vibrato from the finger tip, back to the thumb. It makes a big arc that you can use as leverage, then, use your wrist to control movement beyond the finger. Ideally, your vibrato starts from the finger, back toward the thumb and travels to the wrist on this one. For this specific type of low fret, "bluesy" vibrato. Ideally, your shoulder should not be involved. However, if you are not used to doing this technique, your shoulder is probably making up for what you are not yet used to doing with finger/wrist and is doing the portion of "wagging" the guitar neck. This method also works, and can yield similar results. The finger stays mostly planted and wagging the entire arm back and forth yields the vibrato.

If possible, focus on getting that same type of result, using just the finger and wrist. I know it's tough, especially if you are not used to doing it this way. But your shoulder will thank you and you'll get way more control over the vibrato itself. But no matter what, just giving this a shot is worthwhile IMHO. Vibrato is a crucial part of guitar vocabulary smile.gif

Here's my first take Todd,

I didn't want to play it fast (probably couldn't anyway wink.gif ) I wanted to work the vibrato a bit. I didn't worry too much about the timing either, I just played it to my own feel for now. Please advise.

BINGO!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!

That is exactly it. BAM. Just like that. I'm thrilled to have some great takes on this. This is yet another example of a take that will hopefully inspire others to try this. It requires a pinky pull off, (not something many pinkies like), it requires "bending to pitch" (yet another stumbling block for many fingers) and it requires full, deep, rich, resounding, vibrato.

You nailed the pinky pull, then the bend to pitch, (score/double score) then most of all, NAILED, utterly NAILED the vibrato. Didn't rush it. Let the finger find it's way, kept the thumb ATTACHED to the neck, and let that sweet vibrato ring out. Nyyyaiiiiiiiccccce. smile.gif

Well freaking done, gotta say. I almost expected this to be a first try, that I would sorta give tips on but NOPE. KRUSHED IT.

That specific vibrato technique is very crucial when playing licks with "feeling". It let's you put your emotional output right in to the strings. The faster you use vibrato, the more tense and and high energy it feels. Slower, will feel more soulful and a bit melancholy. These emotional impacts have an effect on the listener even if they don't realize it. Which is why this is so crucial to get right. You can use this same technique up higher on the neck. Put this an octave up and give it a whirl. smile.gif Also, try this lick with a blues backing, ASAP and try to feel it in to place with actual music. That's the last step for any of these. Any blues in G will work, plenty are on youtube for example.

**BONUS POINTS: Very stylish shirt and very spiff Ibby!!

In short. Killed it! Congrats smile.gif
